Huskers Shoot for Split with Hoosiers

The Nebraska women’s basketball team continues its three-game home stand to close the regular season by taking on Indiana Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Tip-off between the Cornhuskers and the hot Hoosiers is set for 7 p.m.

Nebraska will try to rebound from one of its most disappointing games of the season, which came with a 68-50 loss to Purdue to open the home stand on Sunday. Not only did the Huskers suffer their eighth conference loss, they lost starter Kyndal Clark following Saturday’s practice. Clark who started 124 collegiate games in her five-year career, including Nebraska’s first 26 contests this season, could not outlast the extreme pain in her knees.

The Huskers also played without starter Rachel Theriot, who re-aggravated a recurring ankle injury. Theriot will be a game-time decision for Wednesday’s clash with the Hoosiers.

Indiana has won eight of its last 10 games to improve to 10-6 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers, who are 13-0 at home this season including a 59-47 victory over the Huskers on Feb. 7, are hoping for a 2-0 week to close the regular season and secure their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002. IU is coming off a 76-73 loss at Iowa Sunday.

As a team, Indiana is averaging 71.5 points per game on the season, while allowing 67.7 points. Indiana is shooting 43 percent from the field on the season, including 31.3 percent of their threes. The Hoosiers are also a solid 73.5 percent at the free throw line. IU owns a plus-0.4 rebound per game advantage and a plus-0.3 turnover margin.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Indiana 4-3.

    ____________________________________________

Jessica Shepard is the first Husker freshman in history to reach 500 points. She enters the Purdue game with 536 and needs 76 points to produce one of the top 10 scoring seasons overall in school history.

Jessica Shepard needs 42 rebounds to catch Kathy Hagerstrom (277, 1979-80) in the top spot on Nebraska’s freshman rebound list.

Jessica Shepard needs one double-double to set the Nebraska freshman record.

Natalie Romeo owns the Nebraska single-season record with 90 threes this season and her 141 threes are the most ever by a Husker through her freshman and sophomore seasons combined. She needs 10 three-pointers to become the first player in Nebraska history to hit 100 threes in a season.

Natalie Romeo has hit 15 consecutive free throws entering Wednesday’s game with Indiana.

Rachel Theriot’s 182 assists this season rank as the eighth-highest total in Nebraska history.

Allie Havers needs five blocked shots to crack the top five on Nebraska’s junior single-season list.

We were kind of in shock against Purdue. But now it's time to move on. All we can do is move forward.

The team's had a few days to adjust to the new deal....so lets get going.  I see them coming together.....even if it will be tough going getting new assignments, etc.

Looking forward to the Indiana game, no matter the outcome.

    GBR!

a little sidenote: wonderful interview with Emily Wood on sports nightly with Matt Coatney last night. another very impressive young woman. talked about the trip to aussie land. discussed a little about her decision to walk on at Nebraska. told the touching story of her being called into coach yori's office one day (believe she also stated other coaches were in attendance) and coach yori gave her the news that she was giving her a scholarship. if i heard it correctly, she stated coach yori called her dad and gave him the news and Emily stated there were tears on both ends. Emily also explained her role and how she accepts her role as a team member. Matt asked Emily what she plans on doing after her time at Nebraska-----(btw, stated she is a business major)---Emily stated she could see herself as a GA, somewhere, not sure if it would happen with Nebraska, but, she may go into coaching. I was hoping she might give Matt a little ribbing and say, "I want your job!" :D  Listening to her, i could see her do some wbb broadcasting someday.

I converse with Emily's family before every game and I can attest that the entire family, Dad, Mom and sisters are wonderful people. I don't think they will mind me mentioning that Emily's younger sister is coming to Nebraska next year and is trying out for the Scarlet's dance team.

yes, Emily did mention that also. Emily said she can't dance worth a lick, so she turned to bb. Would be pretty cool for the family to have a daughter on the Scarlet dance team and a daughter on the basketball team. i think Emily said she also has a sister that is a sophomore?

Just missed too many shots...Indiana hit the threes. We actually had a chance to come back, a couple of times, but it was not to be. Some turnovers, bad passes, and a couple of bad calls we couldn't afford at inopportune times..

Had some good stuff thrown in, ...good defense and offense at times...several nice inside hand off to scores.  Not consistent enough to close it out when we had opportunities. But they did look better than the Purdue game. Lots of floor time for most of the bench.

Good effort tonight.  Just undermanned losing 2 guards late in the year.  It was fun watching Emily hustle for 25 minutes.  43 for Indiana was the greatest flopper of all time.  Fortunately the refs quit buying what she was selling.

The difference in this game Indiana used their picks to get wide open shots behind arc we on the other hand had a hard time setting set a pick to get someone open.

Emily Wood with her best performance to date. Too bad she couldn't have gotten more playing time in previous games to give her even more experience for times like tonight.

How's come Kalenta never saw the court the second half? Did she get hurt?

Just love to watch Natalie ball hard for 39+ minutes her engine just never stops.

Surprised the refs didn't tee up the Indiana assistant coach at half time as he berated them with a barage of foul language that he was shouting toward them as he followed the team into the locker room.

Natalie is really really good.  I think people take for granted how hard she has to work to get open with people hanging on her.  Even more so now with our injuries to Rachel and Kyndal. Nat has had a great soph year that she should be very proud of.

I almost wonder if Nat could resemble Banham a bit by the time she's a senior.

I did not attend the game but listened to Matt and Jeff's broadcast.  Sounded like Woody was a spark off the bench.  Would be great to play in the WNIT and get these young ones more playing time.  Jazz also had a good game.  I think Havers only missed once the whole game.

All while ferociously guarding the opponent's best guard.

watched the game on BTNplus. team came out fighting. much more evident than the Purdue game. need to still work on some of those "dumb" fouls ( ;) , ;) ....burns and havers) yes, aggressive, but, a little too much so. gotta realize when it's best to just let the play go. i think the apparent early hack on burns, that never got called, might have got her dander up. i thought emily wood did a very nice job on the court. cincore looked better last night.

Matt, especially, and Jeff let it be well known they were not happy with the Nebraska crowd leaving early. think it was around the 2:30 mark of the 4th quarter. huskers might have been down 8? i understand it is the fans choice, but, these players were still fighting hard and the game was not out of reach----at all.

It's so good to see Emily play, I really enjoy her passion to hustle and contribute. Nat is just so impressive, she never quits and I love that you know if she misses a shot she is making a beeline straight for the player on the opposing team who has the misfortune of having the ball. Her tenacity is so admirable and she's only going to get better.

Also not a fan of the people who leave early. I can't imagine being a kid, hustling, being frustrated with how a game is going, and you look up and see people leaving in droves. Stay til the end, clap for theses kids, and show your appreciation for their effort.

Frustrating to watch my girl foul in such an undiciplined manner.  It was Infuriating for me to watch her lack of discipline and intelligence.  It is very much not like her.  I expect much more from her.  Physical mistakes are acceptable.  Even a few mental errors are certainly acceptable, but to repeatedly not play intelligently sets me on fire.

IN was 11 for 19 on 3 point shots (57%).  That's a serious difference maker.

I'm not basketball expert, but I watch the Huskers when they're down by 10 with 3 minutes remaining in the game and we're bringing the ball up the court and burning the clock as if it's the 2nd quarter.  From an outsider...  It seems dumb.

The officiating was worse than I've seen in KS HS basketball.  It was stunningly bad.

I still like Rachel's hustle.  Coming back after an injury especially for a freshman is difficult.  I'm sure she will learn to pick her spots of when to assert herself with out going over board.  Glad to see her in a starting role.  I always felt that Allie is better coming off the bench then starting.

as far as Burns, absolutely! hopefully her offseason "procedure" will be a rather minor thing and rehabilitation will be short. excited to see her skills improve and very excited to see her leadership role expand next season. also agree with Havers coming off the bench, but, really not too big of a deal.

btw, the "secrecy" on injuries has always been a head scratcher for me. i never have heard a real good explanation (in my mind, anyway) for why coaches choose to go that route---but, that's just me.

My game ball, goes to woody for taking one to her head. And playing a career high 25 minutes. Thought that maybe she was going to hit all of shots but oh well. And how the refs were going to give the ball indiana with blood running down her face was unreal.
