Huskers Shoot for Sweep Against Ospreys

The Nebraska women’s basketball team takes aim at a sweep of its extended season-opening weekend when the Huskers take on North Florida at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Monday.

Tip-off between the Huskers and the Ospreys is set for 7 p.m.

Nebraska produced a record-setting performance in an opening-day win over Arkansas Pine Bluff Saturday. Natalie Romeo erupted for a Husker season-opening record 30 points by draining 6-of-9 three-pointers. She also dished out four assists and set the defensive tone for the Big Red off the bench, despite battling illness this week which kept her out of the starting lineup.

Jessica Shepard produced multiple records of her own. The 6-4 forward set school freshman records in an opening game with 24 points and 13 rebounds, becoming the first freshman to ever put up a double-double in a debut.

Monday’s game will be the first-ever meeting with North Florida. The Huskers are a 34-1/2 point favorite. Coach Darrick Gibbs brings his first North Florida team to Lincoln after opening his head coaching career with a 62-55 win at UMKC.

North Florida struggled to an 11-19 overall record that included a 2-12 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Despite the personnel losses, the Ospreys may have found a leader in junior point Claire Ioannidas. She spent the past two seasons at Trinidad State junior college in Colorado, but erupted for 29 points in her Division I debut at UMKC.

    Probable Starters:
    Nebraska Cornhuskers
    43 - Rachel Blackburn - 6-3 - Fr. - F - 2.0 ppg
    32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - Fr. - F - 24.0
    4 - Kyndal Clark - 5-7 - RSr. - G - 0.0
    5 - Natalie Romeo - 5-7 - So. - G - 30.0
    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Sr. - G - 10.0

    North Florida Ospreys

    5 - Hadley Kiefer - 5-11 - Fr. - G/F - 8.0 ppg
    11 - Taru Madekivi - 6-0 - Jr. - G/F - 0.0
    24 - Maiya Rumph - 6-0 - So. - G/F - 1.0
    2 - Sierra Shepherd - 5-6 - So. - G - 12.0
    23 - Kadesia Johnson - 5-10 - Sr. - G - 5.0

Natalie Romeo’s 30-point performance in the season opener against Arkansas Pine Bluff marked the highest point total by a Husker in an opener in school history. It was also a career high for Romeo.
Jessica Shepard produced 24 points and 13 rebounds in the opener to become the first Husker freshman in history to record a double-double in the first game of her career.
Rachel Theriot will reach the 300 career rebound mark with her next board. She enters the North Florida game with 299 career rebounds.
Rachel Theriot is two assists away from 450 in her career. She ranks fifth in school history in career assists and needs 251 to match the school record of 699 held by Lindsey Moore.
Emily Wood opened her sophomore season by matching her career high with two points in the win over Arkansas Pine Bluff.
Jasmine Cincore opened her sophomore season by tying career highs with six points and three assists while adding career bests in rebounds (4), blocks (1) and minutes (17) against Arkansas Pine Bluff.
Darrien Washington produced six points, five rebounds and an assist in eight minutes off the bench in her career debut against Arkansas Pine Bluff.

My golly, miss molly ...they were a house a fire in the first half.  Just was a pleasure to watch. Chemistry is coming on pretty fast.

Kind of lost their focus in the 2nd half...game was so far out of reach.

They can play fast. Not so much need to dribble around the perimeter. Just pass and shoot. Look for the inside and pass. Find the open player.

43 and Jess are already "seeing" each other in the paint. The whole team plays well together. Jess seems to play faster than I expected. Very quick and smooth for a big. Great hands, and what you can't really teach...she has the feel for the game. Anticipates so well. Already has a college game. She's got some stuff to learn, but what a start.

Pretty cool for the team to have come this far already. Still have a ton to learn, but you can see the improvement every game.

The depth really shows too.  Havers and Kalenta have improved. Havers is becoming a tough rebounder, she had quite a few tonight for the minutes she played.  Kalenta can shoot....her defense is better.

The 3 shooting will be pretty good asset...have several that can hit for 3's this year.

Better competition will be the test of how far they've come, and the test will be here soon.

    Great game :D

I thought North Florida would have gave us a stiffer test than what they showed. Glad they put Jess back in to get that 10th rebound. Two games under her belt and both with double/doubles. Pretty even scoring up and down the roster excluding what Jess put up.

I don't think the coaches are very happy with where we are now in our man defense especially on the perimeter. Hopefully that will come around as we get more games played. Need to bring our free throw percentage up too.

Only 2 more games until the Huskers travel to UConn (who beat Ohio St tonight by 44.)

I'm totally pumped for the UConn game. Young team, great coaching, lets see what happens. Also excited to see if some high power recruits want to join a talented bunch of frosh for the ride down the road.

The main thing with UConn is that they have a tremendous ability to completely take you out of your game.  And then players start doing things that are uncharacteristic of them, like taking iffy shots, fouling a lot, turning the ball over because they are thinking too much, etc.  They made OSU look like a high school team in the little bit that I watched, and I have seen them do that to many other teams in the past.  OSU is a very good team, but if you just watched them for the first time playing UConn the other night, you would never have guessed that.

I think the UConn game is a tough game to prepare your players mentally.  If you go into it with the mindset that UConn is going to win, then it will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.  I suppose you break it down into possessions rather than the entire picture and pick your battles.

Very nice interviews...  Look at Miss Kendal compared to Rachel and Jess...  Her face looks so much mature... Well, she is older and more physically mature.   My point, over the next few years our girls will be even bigger, stronger, tougher, and more skilled.  Should be nice...

Coach Yori said some great things about all the girls...  One minor correction...  Rachel 43 is not a military kid... She is an Army kid; we're an Army family.  :)

Regarding physical play.... Rachel has always been a physical player.  She loves to put her hands on an opponent because it makes the opponent angry...  In the interview you can see a nice bruise on her right arm.

It's also great to see my Rachel and Jess working well together.  I hope to be at the game on Saturday.

As a fan I'm worried about UConn.  The 100-56 beat-down of OSU is impressive.  I worry about Connecticut refs calling ticky-tack fouls on these "fly-over country" "hay-seed" Nebraska kids...  I saw Miss Stewart on Sports Center.  She was very impressive.  I read that OSU's guards were shut down.  We'll see... It's why they play the game.  Ask the Colts in Super Bowl III.

The new rules allows for more contact and more "hands on"..."arm on"... by the defender, actually reinforces Rachel and Jess's game. They already are a physical presence. Some teams may have post players that aren't the "physical" type of player. The rule change play's into our hands.... so to speak.

Clarks interview was great too. She's been around awhile, and by the time your 20 or so, you've matured and get the big picture more clearly. She get's it, and knows she's in a very special place, and understands she has a great opportunity.  She's a team player and helps bring that chemistry out of the newbies.

Simply put she seems to be a really nice genuine person. Definitely a NU type of student/athlete. We're very proud to have both Rachel and Miss Clark here, and represent themselves, and Nebraska so well.

UConn will probably try to shut down the inside game......hopefully we can bomb them with 3's too.

I am really enjoying watching these girls play.  Anybody can score.  If the shot clock is counting down, it isn't just up to Theriot to bail us out.  I hope the outside shooting continues along as we have seen in the first few games, and that our 3 point shot gets better.  These girls really seem to get along well and they share the ball well.  Just great chemistry, and it's fun to see Yori so excited.

I am also happy to see that Kalenta is getting some minutes, and that Emily Wood has knocked down some 3s.  Hopefully Esther will pick up some points in the next game.

Notice in the third video? That Rachel B. 43 kid is a great interview, as well as a force of the inside game.

I have been noticing that most board member are using Dirrk  when referring to 43's father.  If you look close you will notice that it is Dlrrk instead of Dirrk.   Dlrrk, your wife corrected me at the game a week ago when I talked to her.  Looking forward to seeing you Saturday.

I was going to post  signhuh.gif, before I realized it was 'DLRRK' not 'DIRRK'  (for the 'age-impaired eyes'  ;))

(now, how do you pronounce it? redface.gif)

I don't know if there is a pronounciation.  Looks to be the first initial of everyone in the family.

It's all OK jumpmaster...  The dlrrk = David, Lisa, Rebecca, Rachel, Katelyn...  Years ago (before Kate) the "k" was Kiowa (our dog). It just worked out...

Leaving Afghanistan today, inshallah (god willing)...

Chemistry is a big deal in units as well as sports.  It seems this team genuinely likes each other.  Being teammates as opposed to just being team members is a big deal.

We all know that tough roads lay ahead.  But the possibilities are exciting.

Regarding placing a hand on an opponent's back...  Rachel 43 says some players get so angry about it...  So she'll do it even more... It's all about getting in their head.
