Huskers Close 2016 at Iowa on New Year’s Eve

The Nebraska women’s basketball team makes its first Big Ten Conference road trip of the season on Saturday by taking on Iowa on New Year’s Eve at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Tip-off between the Huskers (4-9) and the Hawkeyes (9-5) is set for 2 p.m.

Nebraska heads to Iowa after suffering a narrow 62-58 loss to 12-2 Northwestern on Wednesday at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.

Sophomore Jessica Shepard led the Huskers with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while freshman Hannah Whitish added a career-high 12 points while making her first career start.

The only three players on Nebraska’s current roster who played in last year’s game with Iowa are Shepard, senior center Allie Havers and junior guard Jasmine Cincore.

The Huskers lead the all-time series with Iowa 12-11, including eight straight wins to open NU’s participation in the Big Ten. That winning streak culminated with Nebraska’s 72-65 victory over the Hawkeyes in the 2014 Big Ten Tournament Championship Game in Indianapolis.

    PROBABLE STARTERS:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers
    32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - So. - F
    22 - Allie Havers - 6-5 - Sr. - C
    5 - Nicea Eliely - 6-1 - Fr. - G
    3 - Hannah Whitish - 5-8 - Sr. - G

    22 - Kathleen Doyle - 5-9 - Fr. - G

    Scouting Iowa

Iowa heads into Saturday’s game with a 9-5 overall record after dropping a 70-65 road decision at Illinois in its Big Ten opener last Wednesday.

Megan Gustafson led the Hawkeyes with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Ally Disterhoft added a double-double of her own with 11 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort to the Illini.

Kathleen Doyle who spurned the Huskers contributed 12 points and six assists, while Christina Buttenham pitched in 12 points and five rebounds but committed five turnovers before fouling out in 25 minutes of action.

Tania Davis was shut out on 0-for-6 shooting in 35 minutes, although she managed five rebounds and five assists.

Iowa’s Lisa Bluder will be the third in an amazing stretch of head coaches the Huskers are facing midway through the 2016-17 campaign. Bluder, who is in her 33rd season as a head coach and 17th season at Iowa, owns 688 career wins and will be the third consecutive coach

Nebraska has faced with more than 600 victories and 30 years of head coaching experience. She followed Northwestern’s Joe McKeown, who owns 650 career victories in 31 seasons as a head coach.

Nebraska’s six-game stretch against highly successful coaches began with the legendary Geno Auriemma, who owns 967 wins at UConn. Following the Iowa game, Nebraska’s next three opposing coaches have all notched at least 400 wins as head coaches, beginning with Maryland’s Brenda Frese (440 wins) and Michigan State’s Suzy Merchant (415) before facing Naismith Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer (974) and Rutgers

Overall, the six coaches have amassed 4,134 wins in 182 seasons as head coaches.

    Husker Nuggets

Jessica Shepard leads the Huskers with averages of 17.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. She produced her 17th career double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds in Nebraska’s Big Ten opener with Northwestern

Nicea Eliely, has started all 13 games and is averaging 8.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game

Nebraska senior Allie Havers has competed in 109 consecutive games since the first game of her freshman season in 2013-14.

Jasmine Cincore owns the longest streak of consecutive starts among the Huskers with 18. Allie Havers has made 16 straight starts, while Nicea Eliely and Jessica Shepard have each started 13 straight games this season.

Hannah Whitish was Nebraska’s top contributor off the bench in non-conference play before making her first career start in Nebraska’s Big Ten opener with Northwestern. Whitish, scored a career-high 12 points and added four assists in a career-high 27 minutes against Northwestern.

Nebraska’s four-player freshman class of Rylie Cascio Jensen, Nicea Eliely, Grace Mitchell and Hannah Whitish have been looked to for immediate contributions on the Huskers’ 11-player active roster.

I mentioned in another thread that I watched about 1/2 of the Iowa- Illinois game a few days ago.  Illinois won...they are a different team, and better than last year.  They pretty much just out shot Iowa. Not many mistakes.

And Iowa overall doesn't look as strong as last year. But they'll be at home, so that will make a difference too. They seem to play well at home. Doyle is starting for Iowa...she has a nice and smooth 3 shot. She can play. Brings energy to Iowa.

Their center is what kept them in the game....rebounding and scoring.  She's a sophomore...and was on the B1G freshman team last year I think. Not huge...6-2 or 6-3.  They didn't seem to have another big that was particularly dominate, so played the starter a lot.

If Jess and Allie can neutralizer her some, it will make a huge difference. Disterhoff (sp) had an average game for her...nothing spectacular...wasn't shooting very well....then anyway.

Just wondering if anyone else is heading to Iowa City? We're in Des Moines now, but wouldn't mind finding out where other fans tickets are so we can sit with somewhere close together when we go to buy our seats. Went there three years ago and got put in with a bunch of Iowa fans, one was Disterhoft's oldman and he didn't particularly appreciate us sitting near him rooting against his kid. Thank God we had Hooper and Tee go off in that game but I digress. Hope this road trip goes better than the last did a few weeks ago down I-80. If I can I'll check this thread when we get close to the arena.

Not to be negative all the time, but this is really frustrating to watch. Our defense is absolutely atrocious. We don't get back; we always seem lost in the half court set - allowing tons of wide open looks. There's just no intensity or emotional on the floor or from the bench.

I'm watching on BTN Plus, but I don't get any box showing the team scores, Time left, shot clock, etc.  Is anyone else having that problem?

(BTW good job :Ladies coming back to take the lead, and being down only 3 pts. at the half :))

It's that way here in Nebraska, I think they just don't have any graphics.

Love seeing Whitish in the starting lineup. Her outside shooting really helps offensive production. It was nice to see over 70 points on the board. The offense flows much better with the guards driving into the lane occasionally.  Now...if we can just limit the turnovers and tighten up the defense. This was a game we could/should have won if we had limited the wide open shots by Iowa.

Nice way to finish Ladies, with a 9-0 run (coming back from a double-digit deficit) :Mfclap::Mfclap::Mfclap: (too bad it wasn't a 12-0 run ;), but we had our chance to tie at the end )

We are getting better each game! :Shout:

Thanks Bugeaters1.  Very frustrating watching without having the box score on the screen.

I don't know which was more frustrating - Watching BTN Plus and having to listen to the horrible 'homer' announcing;  or, listening to Matt & Jeff on the Huskers app, which was about 45 sec ahead of the video (and no box score for perspective).

I listened to Matt, Jeff as I was cooking supper for my daughter and son in-law. My wife would come and ask my what the score was.

Hannah, for a freshman, does a nice job of running the offense and kind of keeping order...a bit like Rachel T used to do. Let alone her shooting. If we just can develop one more player that can get 3 or 4 more three's per game it will help tremendously.

Pretty good improvement on game management overall...but we didn't run out of gas...and finished strong.....thought Iowa may have been the one that failed at the end.

Yes, we still have trouble with silly turnovers, and more lapses in covering the other teams transition. To many fouls. We didn't stop their inside game like I had hoped we could/would. That made a big difference. Distrhoff hit just enough shot's to keep them in the game. I guess their better experience was enough to get it done. Doyle will be good....but played like a freshman about 1/2 the time.

Our zone defense (finally used it...they must have read our forum :))...and it was very effective...really threw Iowa for a loop. Too bad we didn't go to it earlier. Our girls seem to do a better job of defending, and rebounding with the zone.

Better game again...the last 2 are good for the team,......they are finding they can be competitive in the B1G.  It will be a tough road..but we're much better than when we started.

I was on the road all day so didn't get to watch the game yet but in reading the above comments and looking at the Stat Sheet the thing that stands out in addition to the turnovers is the lack of production from the bench.  10 points less in this game then Iowa.  Need to find somebody there to step up.

Best showing of the year so far even if it was a loss. Turnovers hurt us today got to get that number down starting Tuesday.

Game by game getting better. Think maybe that difficult non-conference schedule might have helped to get us to this point. Still sloppy on the defensive end but really glad to see the Huskers mix up the defenses and throw a 2-3 zone on them! And it proved to be successful as they struggled against it.

Really like the never say die attitude that the Huskers played with! I think what hurt us most from winning this game is when Allie picked up her 4th foul and had to sit late in the game.

Hannah's proving why she needs to be in the line-up on a regular basis! She had another great stat line today. Four kids in double figures scoring wise today! Be nice to have that every game from here on out.

I think we surprised their coaches and fan base as well, as the feeling I got listening to their post game show was they expected to win by double digits.

Got to see and catch up with one of my favorite Huskers from a long time ago in Kate Galligan!
