Huskers Close Non-Conference with Hungry Red Wolves
The Nebraska women’s basketball team closes non-conference play on Monday by taking on Arkansas State at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tip-off between the Huskers and Red Wolves is set for 7 p.m.

The Huskers carry an 8-0 home record this season and own a 19-game home non-conference winning streak heading into the Arkansas State game. The Big Red are coming off a 90-67 win over Northern Arizona on Saturday.

Jessica Shepard and Rachel Theriot erupted for big games. Shepard powered in 35 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field, including 14 points in the first quarter and 15 as Nebraska pulled away in the fourth. She also grabbed a career-high four steals. Theriot added 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The Huskers also got strong games from Natalie Romeo and Anya Kalenta.

The most experienced team the Huskers will face all season, Arkansas State features five senior starters including a trio of fifth-year seniors. The Red Wolves also have an experienced head coach with Brian Boyer in his 17th season.

The Red Wolves, who went 24-6 a year ago with a 16-4 record and a second-place finish in the Sun Belt Conference, are led by fifth-year senior guard Aundrea Gamble.

Arkansas State’s unbelievably experienced backcourt also features fifth-year seniors Amanda Lawson and Brittney Gill. At 5-10, Lawson leads an undersized ASU squad with seven blocked shots, while the 5-8 Gill is one of only two Red Wolves averaging better than five rebounds per game. Jessica Flanery, a 5-10 guard, completes the four-out look of the ASU backcourt. Flanery leads the Red Wolves with 17 three-pointers. Inside, senior Khadija Brown-Haywood is the lone forward in the starting five and she stands just 5-11. However, she leads the Red Wolves with 8.8 rebounds to go along with her 13.6 points per game.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers
    43 - Rachel Blackburn - 6-3 - Fr. - F - 6.3 ppg
    32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - Fr. - F - 19.5
    4 - Kyndal Clark - 5-7 - RSr. - G - 4.7
    5 - Natalie Romeo - 5-7 - So. - G - 14.9
    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Sr. - G - 12.4

    Arkansas State Red Wolves
    3 - Khadija Brown-Haywood - 5-11 - Sr. - F - 13.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg
    5 - Brittney Gill - 5-8 - RSr. - G - 7.4 ppg, 6.1 rpg
    11 - Amanda Lawson - 5-10 - RSr. - G - 8.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg
    21 - Jessica Flanery - 5-10 - Sr. - G - 9.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg
    24 - Aundrea Gamble - 5-9 - RSr. - G - 18.9

Nebraska is 1-2 all-time against Arkansas State but the two teams have not met since 1993.

Jessica Shepard’s 35-point effort against Northern Arizona set the Nebraska freshman record, surpassing the 34-point performance by Debra Powell in1982. Shepard also attempted a school-record 20 free throws.

Jessica Shepard needs five points against Arkansas State to reach 200 in her career.

Nebraska is 8-0 at Pinnacle Bank Arena this season to stretch its home non-conference winning streak to 19 games.

Natalie Romeo set a new personal career high for assists in a game (10) against Northern Arizona.

Nebraska is averaging 86.5 points per game at Pinnacle Bank Arena this season.

Allie Havers made her first career start in the win over Northern Arizona.

Anya Kalenta is coming off arguably her best game as a Husker with a seven-point effort in the win over Northern Arizona that included a career high of 14 rebounds

Darrien Washington finally returned to action for one first-half minute against Northern Arizona.

This in my opinion will be our toughest non conference test this season inside PBA. This is a very good and experienced team and they will without a doubt come in here tomorrow night with the confidence of knowing that they have the horses to leave Lincoln with a win.

We need to come out strong from the get go and play a complete 40 minute game. The Huskers need to control the boards, don't commit silly fouls, keep our turnovers to a minimum and make our shots from the outside. Although ASU is a smaller team, they can hurt you in many ways. They do a good job at rebounding and hustling for loose balls and they take good shots when they get them. In their two losses, they lost by 4 at Florida a team that beat #11 Florida St and lost by 2 at Tenn/Chattanooga a team that lost by 2 to #14 Tennessee.

JShep will see a double and sometimes triple team underneath the bucket. Expect Rachel T and Nat to have someone in their grill the whole time. Which means KC needs to nail that outside shot when open.

This game could come down and be decided at the free throw line so we need to make our charity tosses.

That being said, I hope my feelings about this game are wrong and we win going away.

We certainly have an excellent chance in this game. We must cut down on turnovers....what ever kind they might be.

This is a very experienced team we'll face...we'll need to stay in the 45-50% shooting range..... and MAKE free throws. They may be the difference...for either team. So we can't foul much...don't let them have the free throws.

Hope we have a set of ref's that know the game...and the rules....and how to call the game.  Is it just me...but seems like the refs are not so "qualified" some times this year.

    Hit the 3's

    Defense ! Defense ! Defense !

One of the refs that did the game yesterday is in Lubbock today and is doing the same thing down there as he did here yesterday. Brain Hall if you must know.

The refs are doing bad job but they are supposedly some of the best. If you watch much WBB on television you will see them all over the country. Lisa Parks who put the screw job on us in Cal has worked multiple national championship games. Ann Schroeder who did our game yesterday must do 5-6 games a week. So what's the answer to get good officiating.

I don't know, the majority of them do a good job. And maybe he is just having a bad week like we have at our jobs from time to time. I think that he did the NC game last year. It's just funny that there seems to be a pattern with him. We watch seven to eight games a week.

ASU has an assistant coach who was the top assistant at Creighton for seven years helping to get Creighton into the NCAA and getting their first win. So this will be an interesting game to say the least.

granted, haven't seen ark st play, but, from doing a bit of reading i could see a "mini" version of cal. maybe similar play, they just don't have the length cali does. could see where very good passing/ball movement needs to be at a premium.

Anyone else trying and failing to get BTN Plus to stream? BTN Plus finally started streaming with score 8-7, before Clark's layup. So, never mind.

    Do you have sound?

I thought A St would be the quick team...doesn't look like they are. We seem a bit quicker.

Yes, make the lay ups and free throws we're easily up 10 more. And we're still driving me crazy with our turnovers...bad passes mostly.

Our size is bothersome to N A

Asu had to go to a half court press to slow the run game down

Yori is want them to push push push. Even on the press we seem to break it rather easy maybe miles needs to come watch how to break a press and pass the ball

    woohoo.gifLADY HUSKERS WIN!    woohoo.gif

79-71 over Arkansas State (game was a lot closer than the score indicates, often a 1 pt game until near the end!)

Kyndal Clark steps-up with 22 pts in the absence of Rachel Balckburn #43 and Maddie Simon #24.

BTN Plus has a lot of issues to work out.  They keep asking me to subscribe - although I'm already a subscriber (it doesn't keep them from automatically charging my cc each month, I notice!)

And then near the end of the game  I get the BTN screen (you know, the one with the clock ticking off) from 5 mins left in the game (and a 2 pt game) not coming on until 2 mins left when Huskers were 6 pts ahead (then pausing randomly for the last two minutes).  Talk about an Excitement Killer!
