Huskers Open Exhibition Play with Bearcats

The Nebraska women’s basketball team opens play for the 2016-17 season when the Huskers take on Southwest Baptist in exhibition action at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Bearcats is set for 2 p.m., with tickets available now at Huskers.com.

Free live audio of Sunday’s exhibition game will be available on Huskers.com and through the Huskers App and the TuneIn App. The game will be carried live on radio by the Husker Sports Network.

Nebraska’s exhibition game with the Bearcats will mark the first appearance on the Husker sideline for Coach Amy Williams.
While Williams and her entire 2015-16 USD staff (Tom Goehle, Chuck Love, Tandem Mays, Amanda Hart) will make their Husker debuts against Southwest Baptist, many familiar faces return to the court to power Nebraska.

Jessica Shepard, a 6-4 sophomore forward from Fremont, Neb., who earned first-team All-Big Ten honors a year ago, returns to lead an experienced front court. The 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Shepard averaged team highs of 18.5 points and 8.6 rebounds in 2015-16. She also claimed Preseason All-Big Ten honors heading into 2016-17.
Shepard is joined inside by senior Allie Havers. The 6-5 center from Mattawan, Mich., averaged 8.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in her first season as a starter in 2015-16. Havers and Shepard should give the Big Red one of the Big Ten’s most formidable starting front lines in 2016-17.

Senior guard Esther Ramacieri, junior guards Jasmine Cincore and Emily Wood, and sophomore guard Maddie Simon will all provide levels of experience to the Husker backcourt. Newcomers Rylie Cascio Jensen, Hannah Whitish, Nicea Eliely and Grace Mitchell are all expected to get chances to contribute early in their Nebraska careers.

    Probable Starters
    Nebraska Cornhuskers
      32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - So. - F
      22 - Allie Havers - 6-5 - Sr. - C
      11 - Esther Ramacieri - 5-8 - Sr.
      12 - Emily Wood - 5-5 - Jr. - G
      34 - Jasmine Cincore - 5-10 - Jr. - G

    Southwest Baptist Bearcats
      3 - Caylee Richardson - 6-2 - So. - F
       22 - Mackenzie Skupa - 6-2 - Sr. - F
       1 - Morgan Henderson - 6-0 - So. - G
      2 - Megan Rosenbohm - 5-6 - Jr. - G
      4 - Alex Botkin - 5-7 - Sr. - G

Southwest Baptist comes to Lincoln for the first time to meet the Huskers in exhibition play on Sunday. Coach Kelsey Keizer led the NCAA Division II Bearcats to a 16-13 overall record that included an 11-11 MIAA conference mark last season.

Southwest Baptist, which is located in Bolivar, Mo., features talented sophomore Calee Richardson. She led the Bearcats with 13.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game as a freshman while starting all 29 games. Richardson was joined up front in all 29 contests a year ago by Campbell, Neb., native Mackenzie Skupa. The 6-2 senior from Silver Lake High School averaged 6.8 points and 3.9 boards per game as a junior.

Alex Botkin, a 5-7 senior guard averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 boards as a junior for the Bearcats.

Southwest Baptist will bring six newcomers to Lincoln with a five-player freshman class and 6-3 junior college transfer Kiana Peterson.
    ______________________________
One of Coach Amy Williams’ primary objectives early in the season will be to find a starting five from a relatively inexperienced group of Huskers. Only six players on Nebraska’s roster have ever started a game for the Huskers.

Jessica Shepard is Nebraska’s returning leader with 29 career starts in 31 games as a freshman.

A three-year contributor on the court, 6-5 senior Allie Havers adds 21 career starts to Nebraska’s level of experience to begin 2016-17.

Only three other returning Huskers have ever started a game for Nebraska, including Jasmine Cincore (6), Maddie Simon (5) and Esther Ramacieri (4). Overall, Nebraska returns a total of 65 starts to begin 2016-17.

A little bit of Southern Baptist trivia. Senior Mackenzie Skupa a Class D-2 Silver Creeek High School alum and a native of Campbell, Nebraska  starts for the Bearcats and is excited to get to play in PBA. She was recruited to Southern Baptist by previous Southern Baptist head coach Todd Voss who at one time coached girls high school basketball at BDS in south central Nebraska and was also the Head coach of Concordia University in Seward in the early 2000's.

Southern Baptist U comes to Lincoln with an exhibition win under their belt. They beat a team called "Livin the Dream" last Tuesday night 79-65.    Megan Rosenbohm led the SBU Bearcats with a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Caylee Richardson was also in double figures with 16 points in the victory. The game was close throughout until the last few minutes when SBU went on a 11-1 run to end the game.

It should be a good game for Coach Amy and the players to learn from before getting into the arduous non-con schedule.

Too bad there is no live video stream!

I think I'm just as interested in seeing her first coaching job on the sideline as I'm watching what these new freshmen are going to bring to the table!

    :Signhuh:

;)  Sounds like it's coming together pretty good listening to the first half (at least listening to the announcers). Huskers with an 11 pt lead at the half, 40-29. Pretty even up to about the middle of the 2nd qtr then the Husker ladies started to pull away a little.  Looks like we are getting some real good newcomers. :)  Rylie Cascio-Jensen with a nice trey (6pts, 2rbs, 1 assist); several nice plays from Nicea Eliely (4pts, 2 rbs); & Darrien Washington (2pts, 2rbs).  Allie Havers led off, making the first score (6pts in the half), Jess with 19 pts, and Jasmine with 2 pts and Maddie with 1pt.

So Baptist getting into some foul trouble 12-7 for Lady Huskers.

Announcers sound encouraged - particularly with the team play!

Not so good 3Q.  After leading by 17, So Baptist cut lead Huskers lead to 5 (50-45) whose 3Q play was characterized by sloppy passing and turnovers leading to So Baptist points.  Lady Huskers  3pt shooting 11.1% (1-9) vs 33.3% (4-12).

Lady Huskers win the Exhibition Game 73-71 in a squeaker finish  (So. Baptist misses a game-winning trey as time expires).

So Baptist was killing us with the treys (7-18 vs our 3-13), & Points in Transition (19 turnovers vs their 12). Shooting from the field 45.2% vs our 42.1%.  Fouls & Free-Throws saved it for us (22-34 vs their 8-12).

    Jess with 30 pts - 13 rbs; Allie with 14 - 6, Rylie with 7 - 2.

Will be interesting to hear the impressions of those able to attend the game!

Almost jinxed it for us!  (just kidding)

Coach Amy,  got lax in the 2nd half - way too many turnovers and easy points for them in transition.  Good learning experience for the team.

Post game conversation with Coach...she was pretty straight forwarded about the problems...way to many turnovers, etc etc. Said very matter of factually...we'll get better, will fix some of the obvious problems. Said there just hasn't been enough time to put everything in, get repetitions, etc etc.

Just listening......sounding like the obvious....confusion by many on what to do, what to look out for, passing weak, not be overwhelmed by the whole thing.

And we had to rely on the bigs inside to much. But that was to be expected. So we need to get the guard play going, so we'll have a more rounded game, and not so much of.... defenders gang up on Jess defenses.

But it also sounded like a few glimpse's of talent by the young ones.  I couldn't really tell if we we're trying to push the ball up court by just hearing the audio.

Also sounding like we certainly could have used Burns toughness in the middle. We'll miss that all year. Hope she heals up, and gets back to her old self.

Husker fans are going to have to be patient as it may take a while it looks like.  We have a long ways to go, looked pretty sloppy. Got out hustled quite a bit of the time. Need to shore that up soon. Need to figure out when the opponent over plays the passing lanes not to make that pass.  Lots of passes that went straight to the other team as result of this. Need to find a point guard.

Loved the fact the Huskers mixed up the defenses from a man to a 2-3 zone.

Allie Havers actually had a great shooting afternoon but they had her playing at the top of the key all through out the game. Give Nicea Eliely a little time and this kid is going to be a dynamite player for the Huskers. Really impressed with how she played for it being her first game on both ends of the court. Maddie Simon only played sparingly as did Darrian Washington. Maddies play on the defensive end is what's keeping her on the bench for periods of time. Darrian just needs some playing experience. Jessica Shepard looks as if she picked up right where she left off from last season. She' going to face a double team every game the Huskers play from here on. Riley Jensen, Hannah Whitish and Grace Mitchell looked like what freshmen look like for their first game on the court. Give these girls a little more experience and they'll start coming around, although Jensen did show some good play at times.

Maybe 2500 fans in the stands.

Game ball goes to Nicea! You guys who didn't get to see the game are going to like how this kid plays! She's only going to get better!

Oh the first time in 15 years our head coach walked the sidelines in a dress!

I was at the game and it was apparent through out that coach Williams was giving everyone a chance to play and learn from that.  Lots of opportunities to study game film and correct mistakes.  Certain combinations of players looked quite good together at times and other combinations didn't.

Very impressed with Nicea and also pleasantly surprised with Riley.  Not so with Esther as she can't shoot and had a team leading 4 turnovers.  I can live with turnovers by freshman in the first game but not that many from a senior.  We need more out of Maddie and Jasmine as time goes on.  Hannah seemed a bit overwhelmed but expect more from her as time goes on.  Grace battled hard and didn't back off which is a good sign. The offense isn't far enough along to set up many threes yet.  Jess and Allie played very well together looking for each other as they were double teamed.  They make a great inside combination.

I'd agree with Row6. Nicea will be a nice addition. Love her aggressiveness to the hoop. Cascio-Jensen might be the best walk on we've had here. She will contribute.

The rest of the guards were pretty inconsistent.

We will struggle from 3 it looks like. I've heard good things about the transfers as shooters but that doesn't help now. Jess and Allie will be the focus of every team we play.

Coach Williams always had good 3-point shooters so this will definitely take time to adjust.

one thing that surprises me, even though it is first and only exhibition game, was maddie simon. starting not that big of deal right now, but, i am a bit puzzled she didn't crack that line-up. a little stunned didn't get more out of her against a DII team. hopefully, things will change, but...how that develops will be something to watch down the road.

really appears Nicea is a great pickup! her play sounded pretty impressive over the broadcast. hope Cascio-Jensen keeps developing also.

She had the surgery on Oct 4th. We could sure use a healthy Burns this season that's for sure! Looked like she was moving around fairly well in pregame shagging balls under the bucket for only being a few weeks out of surgery yesterday.
