How many years (and how much proven success) before Connie Yori was being paid north of $500,000/year?

 

5 years, $2.8 million.  She'll be getting paid more in the next 2 weeks than she did all of last year.

What's been published in the media was that 10 players and staff came forward with complaints that Yori was a bully and pushed kids too hard.  Romeo says it's not true, that players were immature; Shepard says Romeo threw her teammates under the bus for saying that.  Nowhere in that discussion does anyone say that Connie Yori failed to recruit players with which she could win at this level.

 

If you're making a coaching change because of bullying -- which is ostensibly the case -- then the coaching change better be the fix for the problem.  They're not bringing in this new coach and paying her over half a million right off the bat for her to come in and fail to win.

 

She is NOT inheriting a rebuilding job.  This is NOT Tim Miles inheriting an empty cupboard when he took over.

 

The "problems" had nothing to do with the talent level on the team and everything to do with the manner with which that talent was motivated (or not motivated.)  So, no, those problems do NOT constitute a "rebuilding" project and to suggest otherwise is absurd.

 

I repeat:  You do NOT bring in a half-million-dollar-a-year coach in this game to inherit the program she's inherting without expecting immediate results.  I'm sorry if a couple of you can't deal with that.

Well Norm  I did indeed give you a down arrow for the LOL comment simply because I felt someone as well spoken as yourself (no sarcasm here at all) can do a hell of a lot better than a simple LOL.  Your comments above better articulate your position. 

I, for one, have no idea what the market value is of a WBB coach with 18 years of experience so I am in no position to draw such a conclusion as you did in making the statement that she better win now.  I have more patience when considering we have no idea of the roster condition come next Sept. 

As far as player mistreatment, I think that is being far too emphasized.  When I was first told about this, it was stated the big concern for the University was the discrimination suit filed by Bethea (SP?).  That Title 9 thingy could cause huge waves.  Now, this may be completely off base but....

In fairness, Norm, we're going to be counting on true freshmen to play huge minutes.  Take Romeo out and it's not  isn't a great lineup.  Unless the true freshmen are really, really good.  Romeo is a big, big loss.  And point guard is really important in college hoops.  And we don't have one.

Prior to "regime change" we had a couple of the best returning players in the league, a solid supporting cast, and an extremely good recruiting class coming in. There was no rebuilding needed. The only thing that has potentially created a rebuilding situation is the "regime change" itself. If you 86 a successful coach due to bullying, and spend half a mill a year on her replacement, you'd better be right.

True.  But, see my post above.  This potential issue didn't exist but for the fact that Connie was forced out. 

Assuming that's true, that she was forced out, that was a really gutsy call.  And maybe it works and maybe it doesn't.

But you don't make a coaching change to fix a chemistry problem and not expect that the new coach is going to fix the chemistry problem.

Maybe Amy Gusso Williams isn't on the hot seat to win right away, but someone else might be if she doesn't.

Correct, there is a lot going on here.  There is deep paranoia about Title 9 among other things.  Victimology is winning down at that place.   I could give a lot of examples, but I will try to keep this on basketball vs. politics and culture.   

I have a question for the  two or so posters who are in the know about South Dakota & specifically USD & SDSU.   I know Coach Williams has been successful and won the WNIT.  I also know that the team that won the WNIT was senior laden and that this senior class was recruited by thae previous coach. 

So my question is "How are the three classes recruited by Coach Williams?".  Did any get to play much and how would you rate the talent level of these classes?

Coach Amy's senior year was cut short after suffering a torn ACL at the start of the Big 12 season. She received a medical redshirt and played sparingly her medical redshirt senior year. After walking on for the Huskers she was awarded a scholarship her senior season.

One other thing I got to thinking about this afternoon is, this will be the first season in "19 years"  that our head coach will actually walk the sidelines wearing a dress while coaching!!

what i can tell you is '5 State Hoops' rated usd's 2016-17 class #1 in the 5 state region (includes all universities and colleges). it used to be "open" access, but, apparently no longer. i believe she has 5 recruits coming in and the names i do know is madison mckeever from western minnesota---she went over 3000pts in her career. good 3 pt shooter. she has cierra duffy (sister of caitlyn who is on the team and transferred from csu) coming from st thomas more in rapid city. won the state A and scored 70pts in the 3 games. have to dig a little deeper to find out the final two names. coach williams also got a transfer from sdsu, kaitlyn severyn from pierre, sd. i believe a big reason was because of the boyfriend. oh, she also got another from nebraska, fremont's rylie jensen. 

coach williams also had the following recruits from nebraska: bridget and allison arens (crofton), jaycee bradley (norfolk), kate liveringhouse (bellevue). others were megan bonar from gardner, ks., madeline homoly from kansas city, ks., jasmine trimboli from iowa western cc (via adelaide, australia), and 6'4" abigail fogg from american university via sault ste marie, ontario. 

who knows how things will shake out now with a new coach coming in, but, i have heard discussion that although the roster will be fairly young, many had faith that williams would have usd competing again next season. avid ones think she will compete for the top spot, but, most comments i have heard see them 2-3 spot in summit and once they get a little experience they expect to be very good again.

i believe one recruit was injured and didn't play this season? i might be wrong on that one. i did notice there were no stats on her, plus, noticed in the wnit games a gal in sweats and knee brace.

I think they had one player that missed 3 games.  Seekamp also had to sit the first couple because of some NCAA thing, but it wasn't due to injury.

I notice a lot of similarities between Coach and Woody.  Extremely intelligent students of the game who both started as walk-ons and earned scholarships and played with gusto and gave a 110% when they got the chance to get into a game.  Also both were crowd favorites.
