Huskers travel to take on the Wolverines

The Nebraska women’s basketball team closes a two-game Big Ten road trip by traveling to Ann Arbor to meet Michigan on Sunday. Tip-off between the Huskers and Wolverines is set for 1 p.m.

The Huskers have battled their way to a four-game winning streak following a hard-fought 62-61 win at then-Big Ten co-leader Purdue on Wednesday. Nebraska led for more than 35 minutes, building a 13-point lead before holding on at the defensive end on the game’s final possession to notch its second straight Big Ten road win.

Nebraska features three double-figure scorers in Jessica Shepard (20.1 ppg), Natalie Romeo (15.5 ppg) and Rachel Theriot (11.8 ppg). The Huskers are averaging 75.6 points per game and holding their opponents to 64.3 points per contest. Nebraska leads the all-time series against Michigan, 10-1, and has won four straight against U-M.

Michigan is 3-4 in Big Ten play entering the contest against Nebraska. Michigan's four conference losses have come by nine points or less in a two-point loss to Purdue, a nine-point overtime loss at Indiana, a seven-point setback to Maryland and a four-point decision to Ohio State. All three of Michigan's wins have come by seven points or less, with all seven Big Ten games for U-M being decided by nine points or less.

The Wolverines continue to pile up the points this season, ranking third in the Big Ten and ninth nationally by scoring 81.5 points per game. U-M has topped 80 points in 11 games and scored at least 90 points seven times. Michigan's seven 90-point games are the most ever by a Wolverine team in school history.

Katlyn Flaherty averaging (22.5 ppg) is part of an experienced Michigan backcourt that includes Madison Ristovski (6.9 ppg) and Siera Thompson (8.8 ppg).

Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico has her squad shooting 49.6 percent from the field, including 39 percent from three-point range. Michigan owns a plus-7.1 rebounding margin and plus-1.6 turnover margin overall, but in conference play the Wolverines carry a plus-2.9 rebound margin and minus-2.3 turnover disadvantage.

Since Kim Barnes Arico took over the coaching reigns, Michigan is 29-14 following a loss. The Wolverines have only lost three straight games three times since KBA arrived in Ann Arbor.

Probable Starters:

Nebraska Cornhuskers

32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - Fr. - F - 20.1 ppg
22 - Allie Havers - 6-5 - Jr. - C - 7.2
4 - Kyndal Clark - 5-7 - RSr. - G - 5.1
5 - Natalie Romeo - 5-7 - So. - G - 15.5
33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Sr. - G - 11.8

Michigan Wolverines

32 - Kelsey Mitchell - 6-0 - Sr. - F - 6.7 ppg
30 - Hallie Thome - 6-5 - Fr. - F/C - 12.8
1 - Madison Ristovski - 5-10 - Sr. - G - 6.9
2 - Siera Thompson - 5-7 - Jr. - G - 8.8
3 - Katelynn Flaherty - 5-7 - So. - G - 22.1

Natalie Romeo continues to knock down threes at a Nebraska record rate. NR5 owns 59 threes on the season, including a Big Ten-best 4.2 per game in conference play.

Natalie Romeo joined the Nebraska career top 10 on Wednesday with her 110th three in just her 42nd career game.

Natalie Romeo ranks fifth nationally with 3.3 threes per game while leading the Huskers with 59 threes on 43.4 percent shooting (25th nationally).

Natalie Romeo ranks third among sophomores in Nebraska history with 59 and needs eight more to match NU career three-point leader Jordan Hooper’s 67

Rachel Theriot leads the Big Ten with 6.7 assists per game, she ranks ninth nationally.

Rachel Theriot ranks No. 18 in career points at Nebraska with 1,236. She needs seven points to catch Brooke Schwartz on NU’s all-time scoring list.

Jessica Shepard reached the 100-point (5 games), 200-point (11 games) and 300-point (16 games) scoring marks faster than any Husker freshman in history.

Allie Havers has made the first nine starts of her career over the last nine games in place of Rachel Blackburn (who is still not quite at 100% nursing a sore knee).

GAME NOTES:

                 Beat Michigan!

This will be a tough one. Maybe a game similar to Purdue, a hard fought away game. Looks close on paper.

Michigan seems to be a little erratic. Has lost games a couple you would think they would win, but can score lots of points anytime.  Mich. shoots 3's pretty well, (Flaherty mostly) will need our perimeter defense to closely guard their shooters. Hasn't beat a top 25 team. (neither have we)  They like us, may have improved as the season has progressed. They shoot well as a team.

Not a real big team, but they rebound well. Thome's their best "big" girl, agile and active. We recruited Thome a year or so ago, as I recall, and she's now starting for Mich, and playing pretty well. If we can slow her down with our bigs, it will make a big difference.

Their starting line up plays the majority of the game and all can score. Our defense will probably make the difference, one way or another.

We can't have many turnovers. Same old story.  Several other issues, but that's it in general.

Burns seems to be back at full strength....we'll need her to fire up the Huskers. Maddie must still be healing up. Hope we have enough gas in the old tank to compete for all 4 qtrs.

It's on their court so they have the advantage. They draw about 2,000 for games...probably enough to make some noise. Give them 5 pts.

They had 18 or so turnovers against OSU on Thursday. so that might well be a wash, also how much will they have in the tank after losing 97 to 90.

yes, odds are this will be a tough road game. gotta be respectable in the turnovers and with second chance opportunities. michigan can score. i did notice thome has fouled out of at least a couple games, so, maybe that will be something to watch. jess, nat, and rachel are going to have to show up on the offensive end, plus, probably going to need another scorer. either allie or clark will need to have a good offensive game, or, huskers will have to up the "bench" scoring (cumulative). flaherty will get some points, but, i think if the huskers can make her really work for what she gets, it may be beneficial as the game goes on.

anyone think we may see maddie today? didn't play against rutgers, but, had a few minutes in earlier games. wonder if she caught the "bug" or, maybe had a setback with the injury? hoping just the "bug". then again, i guess it's possible that her practices just haven't gone well.

***didn't read any articles before posting---guess i kinda repeated everything.

The Huskers need to control the boards, especially on the defensive side to limit second chance points. Limit the turnovers, get a hand in the face of three point shooter and make their bunny layups. Situational timeouts and substitution patterns need to be kept in constant check to keep the players from fatiguing late in the game.

Allie Havers if you remember had committed to Michigan before Kim Barnes Arico was hired and as a result of that hiring she lost her offer to Michigan. I'm guessing AH22 will have a lot of family and friends attending and is determined to give one of her best showings in front of them in what could be her last time to play in Ann Arbor. I see no reason why the Huskers can't come away with their fifth win in a row. #GBR

We have a reason now:  Theriot not playing.  Esther not on the trip.

If there was ever a time for Kyndal Clark to step up in a big way it's today.
