uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: ed 8, vol 8 - Miami

I thought Hammond & Morrow were really strong against Miami's big dude - they really battled him all night and didn't let him go crazy on us, which I feared could happen.

Miami did a nice job face guarding White, and it was obvious he didn't really want to force many shots - it seemed they rotated help on the penetration a little differently than many teams do, so they didn't have to leave him. Miami's coach had some interesting quotes about White, said he knew White's game well since he had recruited White at George Mason & White's sister played at GMU, so he was around their program a lot as a high school player.

Miami is really good and has nice depth, looks like a team that could be in the hunt for the ACC title. We forced them to take - and unfortunately make - a lot of tough shots. Repeating that kind of effort will give NU a chance in nearly every B1G game.

A disappointing loss, but certainly not a discouraging one.

just my opinion, but Watson seems better than benny in pretty much every way. i'd like to see him start.

benny played nearly twice as many minutes as watson.

benny didn't play bad, but i think watson is a better all around player right now.

I had a discussion with a friend of mine before the game about the Watson/Benny thing. It seems that the prevailing thought is that Benny gives us a spark off the bench. While that's true I also think that Watson give us a spark, but it's an offensive spark. That's pretty much the only place Watson holds an advantage over Benny in my mind. And if Benny keeps shooting like this, that advantage is going to be quite small. Watson still has a lot to learn, let Benny have his moment. He's not hurting the team as much as people think/have thought in the past.

On another topic, it didn't look like they wanted to help off White. Granted they didn't need to since anyone who drove to the bucket was met by a giant rim proctor. We need to find a way to go inside out to get White some open kick outs. He hasn't show me much to think he can get his own shot off.

I'm not saying Benny is hurting the team.....but in reference to if Benny "keeps shooting like this"...he looks improved from deep shooting 41% from deep.  But, he's only made 7 three PT FG's...and just a total of 11 FG's on the year.  From the field overall he is shooting just 34%.  Watson also has 4 more assists on the year playing 40 less minutes than Benny....and, Watson has turned the ball over less.  In fact, Glynn hasn't turned the ball over in the past 4 games.

Also, the stats don't necessary reflect the difficulty of the shots.

Benny has become serviceable at knocking down wide open, rhythm shots. If you start asking him to do more on offense, it's probable that shooting percentage/efficiency goes down.

Watson can basically get a shot whenever he wants and he can make them at a clip you can live with for now.

Personnel and situation are going to dictate who plays between Watson and Parker for a while, with Parker getting the benefit of the doubt.

Benny or Watson can be dictated by who is on the court and/or the situation.

I'm not into moral victories at all but do like the way we competed.  This is Miles 4th year so need to start getting over hump with these kind of games.  You can definitely see the recruiting efforts will pay off long term here.

Few takeaways from last night's game

 - Shavon was our best friend and worst enemy in the same game.  He was scoring just fine within the offense and then in crunch time, it was all one-on-one basketball.  Shavon was getting double teamed and still wouldn't pass the ball.  We had no offensive flow and became easy to defend in the last 3 minutes.  We watched that type of ball all last season and need to avoid it happening again.

 - Sure seems like the offense runs better with Watson in the game.  He just has "it" and things tend to happen with him on the court as opposed to Benny.  I know Miles is bring him along slowly but I think our chances would have been better to win that game with Watson on the court down the stretch.  I could see Benny getting more minutes if Watson was turning the ball over but that isn't happening.  Benny had more turnovers than Glyn did.

 - We still have a chance to go 10-3 in the non-conference schedule.  If we can go .500 in conference play, that is 19-12 to end the season.  That would get us into at least NIT and some postseason play.

jake still has a ways to go, but he's all we got right now inside. he had some nice blocks.

mcveigh had a crucial turnover, but he needs to be shooting way more than 1 time per game.

shields played great, but probably tried to do a little too much.

white is pretty consistent. probably should be shooting a little more.

tai has been playing very good all around.

Morrow did alright, but isn't doing as much as i thought he would be. he is playing backup center which is not his position.

I get people wanting Watson to start.  He's a future stud for this team.

WITH that said.  Benny did a HELL of a job on Rodriquez.  That dude can play, and Benny and his on ball pressure was great vs him.  Size wise they matched up fairly well, so I had no problem seeing Benny play the minutes he did.  Benny also did a great job getting into the paint tonight.  Problem was, they had a 6'11 dude waiting on him.  I'm a huge Benny Parker fan.  I think some of the things he does on the defensive end are overlooked by fans because he may not do quite as much on offense.

Either way, its nice for us as fans to name off about 3-4 players that we think "should" be playing more outside of the top 3-4.  Shows that we are finally getting some solid depth to this team.

Getting into the paint is great if something comes of it.  The problem is, that didn't happen when benny got into the paint last night.  He never went up with a shot (thank goodness because it would've been thrown into the 5th row), he never drove and kicked or dished off.  He would get into the paint and then just dribble right back out because he couldn't do anything with it.  That gets us nowhere.

Also, does anyone else roll their eyes the minute Benny gets in a transition situation because he absolutely never scores on a breakaway basket.  When will he learn to either pull it out, or try to get creative with a move or two.  He tries to speed down the floor and then just lay it up with a defender constantly trailing and we are never successful in those situations.

Okay my take is way different. i think that Benny is,saving Glynn mintues.

if Glynn was to play more this early in the year he won't be able to walk by the end of the season when he is needed most.

Glynn isn't that big and musclar and it is a long season of banging. Benny will take the hits for him so that he will be around in the end.

All Freshman hit that wall sometime during the season. Benny will help Glynn's wall be later in the year.

Plus I think it is okay for the two freshman to be first off the bench. It is only the waht 9th game of the year.

It will play it's self out.

And my two cents on White is thatnhe is a very good catch and shoot three point threat. However he does have trouble getting the space he needs to catch and shoot. He also seems to have. Slower release which menas he even needs more room than other shooters lie him.

I saw twice last night where Miami closed out on him faster than he could get his shot off. Guess we need to run him off of more picks or something.

Still a loooooonnnnnnnggggggg season ahead and I really like whee we are at.

AWESOME post.  Could not agree more on everything you said.

Benny NEEDS to play more minutes right now.  You throw Glynn in these games for 30 minutes, and he will physically hit a wall.  I like the way Miles is bringing him along.

Watson is better than Benny in the following

Creating his own shot

Quicker at finding the open man

Instinct

Confidence

Shooting

Benny is better then Watson in the following

Strength

Positioning on defense

Things you could go with either on

Steals

Rebounding

I take Watson 8 out of 10 times, and Parker is more of a situation type player

As far as what I underlined in your post... Best player plays...

Parker also only had 6pts in 34 minutes, only 1 assist, and 1 steal. In 14 less minutes, Watson scored more and had equal stats in the other columns.

To add to that, Parker's counterpart scored 15 or 14 depending on who you consider him guarding most of the time.

Edit: it makes no sense to me to "save his legs" (Watson), because he's a freshman and not strong or in shape yet. You need these games in your non conference to bolster your resume and give your young guys experience. And if he doesn't learn how to break through a physical wall during his freshman year - when would you rather him learn that? Next year?

McVeigh clearly wasn't ready for the moment last night.  But I have a hunch he's the kind of guy who will learn from it, and respond better in the future.  And I suspect Miles knows Jack can handle getting yelled at.

Fun game last night.  Needed a beer at Gate afterward to deal with how it ended.  Beats the old long walk to the car at Devaney and a trip home.  The immediate attitude adjustment available with the new arena is nice.

Hear! Hear!  Just wish I was there to 'Assist with the Adjustment.'

Fun Game to watch, but the team did lose some of their poise at the very end (after Tai fouled out and shavon went down - refs didn't do us any favors).

But this team is growing-up fast. If I've learned anything in the past couple of years I think it's that Miles knows how to instill 'What it takes to Win' in a team (i.e. 2013/14).

I have to disagree. we lost 2 close games against miami and cincy that we badly needed.

there is no reason to save glynn. he is 18 years old and can fully handle a 30 game season.

if he is our best point guard, he should be starting.

I'm ok with Benny starting...if Tai keeps up his improved offensive output.

I like the tone the starting five sets and Watson will still see 20+ minutes a game. He still gets lost a fair amount on D, though he's gotten better at that as we've gone along.

Completely agree. The rotation that Miles is employing off the bench is much better suited with the scoring punch/offensive creation we are getting from Watson.

I am an old man who has gotten more conservative in my athletics over time.

Guess we will just not agree. No harm no foul.
