A short bench just got shorter

Recommended Posts

Miles said on the post-game that the injury to Andre appears serious.  He said it would likely take a guy his size a long time to recover.  He also talked about Sergej getting more minutes but said Sergej needs to get stronger because right now, he's "screenable."  So, while Sergej might get some minutes, it's not likely that he'll step into a starter's role or get starter's minutes.

This team is decimated by injury and the conference season has just started.  And we already had a short bench.  Might be time to adjust our win/loss predictions a little bit.  Just sayin'.

In my very humble opinion, if we have to choose another player to pick up minutes, it should be someone who is on a schollie.  Let's have Serj cut his teeth in the Big Ten.  Let's see if he can struggle through the season in a somewhat positive manner.  We know he needs 20 to 45 lbs over the next few years, but we will then know at the end of the year whether he can be a Mikki Moore or is he another Kelly Lively.

Who would of thought the 330 pound center that missed all of last season would get hurt this year?

It's good thing we gave Peltz 20 min a game in the non-con and zero minutes to Sergej. Sergej is 7'1. If he has any kind of basketball skill, he should be playing regardless of his weight. Keep in mind Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Minnesota, Providence, Nevada, and Rhode Island all offered Sergej.

It was pretty gut-wrenching to see Andre crying on the floor after he turned his ankle, it's been a pretty rough career for him.  Sure, he wasn't probably cut out for the rigors of Div I hoops, but you could sense that he was feeling that was possibly the end of basketball for him.  Not a good way to go out.

And by all accounts a hell of a guy.  It sucks.  Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

I laugh at the people who were saying last spring that they were glad that Jorge left or couldn't wait for him to be gone.  (Laugh on the outside; cry a bit on the inside.)

Guess what.  We're worse off without him.  Truth hurts.

I'm still glad he left because of the way he carried himself on the floor. The reason for people wanting him gone never really had to do with his talent level.

Any somewhat average D1 player would be helping this team, but we have a new coach and are building for the future. I think Keith Coleman, Cory Hilliard, Fahro, and Young would of helped somewhat, but this season is not what we brought Miles in for.

This season was a lost cause before it started, so it would just upset me more if I had to watch Diaz out there not making any hustle plays. This would of been Diaz's last year anyways.

How many more games does this team win with Diaz? 1 in the non con and maybe 2 more in the B1G.

Diaz last year- 8.6 pts. 4.3 rebounds in 27 minutes.

Andre this year- 7.6 pts 4.5 rebounds in 18.3 minutes.

Andre was much better than Diaz but never got in shape and now might be paying the price for it. I'm not going miss the days of Andre and Diaz in the post. They are two post players that are very frustrating in different ways.

what happended to JBD?  i know he left but did he quit basketball all together?

If he was healthy, he would have helped us alot this year.  The Russian showed some nice touch tonight on the offensive end.  I don't think he's a complete stiff.  Just needs to get some confidence & get stronger.

Here is a link to an recent article on Brian Jorge Diaz dated November 28, 2012.  According to the Bing translator, here is what it says:

After having successfully passed his rehabilitation process, bolting player Jorge Brian Díaz confirmed their participation in the coming Championship of the BSN.  For this reason, Brian Díaz, aged 23, today included his name in the list of players newly enrolled. 6-11 Canastero is expected to be one of the first selections in the scheduled draw to be held on January 30, 2013.

"I am well pleased and excited to play in the BSN. I took a little time rehabilitating me and I feel well... crazy by entering on the Court and playing,"said former player for the University of Nebraska, which is considered a candidate for the basketball selected.

Diaz, 23 years, opted not to complete his fourth year of eligibility with the NCAA Cornshuskers and begin a treatment for your condition of tendinitis on the heels on the island.

"It was not improving with treatment that were giving me in College, and I decided to come here. And I am already ready to play".

Diaz, according to his agent Christian Santaella, takes two and a half months in treatment and can already tell that it is 100 percent healthy.

"It has already received the go-ahead from the specialist and takes two weeks making 'driles' vuelve without any pain. Your injury do not put his career at risk, and nor required surgery,"he explained.

According to Santaella, Diaz will play in the top tournament that starts March 31 and expected to be part of the national team in the summer.

Didn't we send JBD to Duke Med Center or something like that?  It would appear that "conventional" treatment did not provide relief.  Good for Brian, I hope all goes well for him...but I repeat, I would sure like to see him on the court for us this year.

After reading some of Coach Miles Twitter comments on having football players play, I think he should seriously talk to Zach Sterup and Bo about Zach playing. I remember watching Zach in high school. At 6-9 and about 260, he was pretty good at the high school level.

Now, could that transition over to the Div1 level, I don't know, but I don't think it would hurt to try. Who knows, maybe Zach has no interest either.

Zach has a chance to either be the back-up or push for starters time on the offensive line next year.  I dont see him passing on that chance to play basketball.

He doesn't need to quit football to play basketball. If memory serves me right, we have had a few others, especially wide receivers who have done both.

WR is way different than OT.  Very few players do it and the majority that do are WR's or TE's.  Sterup as it is needs as much time in the weight to continue building up, the last thing he needs is to be conditioning the way basketball does to slim him down.

Remember he is at Nebraska on a football scholarship.  He needs to be focusing on that.

The other point that was not brought up when I started this topic a couple of weeks ago is that these HS basketball players who have now developed into major college football linemen have a much different body type than they did in their HS playing days.  It may help them in setting picks, but they would be a train wreck attempting to provide any type of "touch"...perhaps, not, but something to think about.  Football players who play the skill positions have bulked up a bit, mainly muscle mass, but not to the extent of the linemen.  That allowed players like Matt and Wilson to transition more efficiently.

I disagree, he will be working out with basketball and be competing against top notch athletes. It may do him some good to get out and bump around with some of the bigs in the Big ten.

He is on football scholarship and is still undersized for his position that the football coaches want him playing.  I would guarantee you he has no interest in playing basketball because it would hinder his chances of getting bigger and better for the sport that foots his bill.  Lets just drop the thought now because it wont happen.  He is an offensive tackle and nothing more.
