Comparison...just because

Recommended Posts

Let's do a rudimentary comparison and open it up to discussion.

Roster entering 2013-2014 season that took us to the NCAA tournament:

Serg Vucetic - Soph, with hope but was a non-contributor, transferred

Kye Kurkowski - Jr. walk on - practice player, non-contributor

Tai Webster - hyped fr that played an important role that was reduced at the end of season

Nathan Hawkins - fr that played sporadic minutes, transferred

Shavon Shields - Soph that played and plays important role.

Nick Fuller - Freshman who redshirted

Dev Biggs - Hyped Jr transfer...left team at mid-year

Leslee Smith - Jr that was a major contributor despite bum wheels

Ray Gallegos - Only senior that we thought was going to carry us...played a role

David Rivers - Jr role player who played sporadically

Terran Petteway - Transfer So. that we held out hope was going to be a good one...and he was

Mike Peltz - Sr glue guy that played sporadic minutes

Benny Parker - Soph who played a key role as a defensive jet

Jordan Tyrance - Walk on who left the team

Tim Wagner - perferred walk on who shattered leg and then transferred

Walt Pitchford - Transfer So. that was more hyped than Terran, starter who ended up in key role

Trevor Menke - Jr. walk on practice player who was a non-contributor

Now, with that team, we made a run in the Big Ten and made it to the dance.  Really, we did.  Think about that, swish that around in your mouth a tad, let it resonate.  Now, let's look at next year based on what we know and what we believe to know:

Andrew White III - Hyped Jr. transfer that we hope plays a significant role

Benny Parker - Sr. who has proven to be a good glue player

Tai Webster - Jr. who's game seems to have been improving

T. Petteway - Sr. All-Big Ten pedigree

S Shields - Sr. gritty, tough, smart, proven Big Ten caliber player

Nick Fuller - Soph. who has shown glimpses of talent

Jake Hammond - Soph with skills, can contribute if he adds strenght and pounds

BJ Day - Walk on and will assume he will be a practice player

J. Trueblood - Walk on and will assume he will be a practice player

Glynn Watson - Hyped top 100 PG - Hope abounds

Ed Morrow - Hyped top 100 PF - Hope abounds

Michael Jacobson - All State Iowa PF - Hope abounds

Jack McVeigh - Hyped aussie SG - Hope abounds

Now, perhaps it is just me, but I compare and contrast these line ups, and man, I am pretty excited about this coming year.  Certainly there still may be a change or two, or three; that is, TP may yet decide to exit, stage left.  But we have others that are being evaluated.  The cupboard will not be empty.  Are there unknowns...sure, but are the unknowns any more significant than they were entering 2013-2014.

Just saying...

I switched the sequence so that they're in order of class from senior to freshman and then deleted the walk-ons because they're not going to be relied up and weren't relied upon.

CWG, we're still in need of a big.  Hammond is only one, inexperienced guy who needs to gain weight and on whom we probably shouldn't expect to rely if we hope to be a tournament team.  He might get there but odds are probably against it.

And then much depends on what Petteway decides and, if he decides to leave, can we find someone to replace him.

I think a roster/lineup next year that has White playing the 3 and Shields playing the 4 would be solid but we'd need to find a shooting guard.  Tai?  Yeah, maybe, if he really comes on as a shooter between now and next year.

As things stand this second, one would have to sort of project a top 7 or 8 rotation that looks something like this:

PG  Benny or Glynn

SG  Andrew or Tai

SF  Shavon or Andrew

PF  Ed Morrow or Shavon

C    Jacob Hammond or Michael Jacobson

Assuming Petteway leaves, we need a big and we need a shooting guard.

Comparing list one allows the benefit of hindsight, which list two does not.  It will be interesting to see what hindsight tells us March 2016.

I'm hopeful too, but I want to be even more hopeful.  And I want it NOW!!!  :D But seriously, I'm obviously not holding out a ton of hope for TP, but man, if he comes back, AND we pick up a big (Edwards?)....hope will abound!

This is an awful generous assessment of Hammonds.

Why do you say that?

Are you basing that on the minutes he didn't play or the minutes he did play?

Based off the minutes I saw him play this past season and the film I saw of him in HS.

Had there not been news of Ptichford's quitting the team/opting for the NBA it wouldn't have been surprising to find out that Hammonds was transferring IMO.

The fact that he couldn't get many minutes last year when one big guy had a chronic injury and the other had a limited offensive game, may or may not speak volumes, but it is concerning.  I think adding a big man for this fall is job A1 for Miles at this point.
