Huskers Hit Road for Showdown at South Dakota State

The Nebraska women's basketball team takes to the road for the first time in 2012-13 when the Huskers clash with South Dakota State in Brookings on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off between the Huskers (3-0) and Jackrabbits (1-2) is set for 2 p.m.

Nebraska heads into Sunday's game after completing a perfect 3-0 home stand with a 77-55 win over Northern Arizona on Friday. South Dakota State comes into the Sunday showdown with a 1-2 record, following a 63-54 loss to Creighton in the Jackrabbits' home opener. Although the Jackrabbits are relatively new to the NCAA Division I ranks, they have become a perennial NCAA Tournament team out of the Summit League under Coach Aaron Johnston. The Jacks have made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances.

Sophomore Megan Waytashek has led SDSU with 12.3 points per game through three contests, while senior guard Ashley Eide has added 10.7 points and 2.7 assists per game. Senior center Katie Lingle ranks No. 3 on the team in scoring and second in rebounding with 9.0 points and 5.7 boards per game off the bench.

While the Jacks have struggled to hit their stride in the early going this season, Coach Aaron Johnston has proven over the past 13 years that he knows how to push the right buttons to produce winning teams in March.

Sunday's game will be the first-ever meeting between Nebraska and South Dakota State in Brookings. Nebraska leads the all-time series with South Dakota State 2-1, including an 80-71 victory over the Jackrabbits last season.

Obviously the team can't look ahead but we fans can. Our ACC challenge opponent in a little over a week #5 Maryland went down in flames tonight to St Joesph 50-49. Going to be a big shake up in the top 10 next week, besides Maryland, #1 Baylor also lost as did #6 Kentucky. We need to take care of business in Brookings tomorrow afternoon.

I thought we looked like we took sleeping pills before the game. Wow did we get outhustled all the time, and I mean everyone. Apparently we thought we could just show up and SDS would give us the game. If we're going to win this year we have to have people besides Moore and Hooper scoring. Emily Cady especially needs to step it up. 4 points in 28 minutes just isn't going to cut it. And Hailey Sample seemed to revert back to last year with 3 points in 24 minutes. Our defense was horrible. I've never seen so many uncontested layups. Not sure what was going on but I hope this game was a wakeup call.

Ditto!

Rebounding and helpside defense was almost non existant. Costly turnovers at the most inopportune times need to be corrected. The chants of over-rated by the SDS students couldn't be more accurate the way we played this afternoon! Don't know what's up with Emily, two air balls from behind the arc didn't even come close, she even had a hard time at the free throw line. I've got confidence that she'll straighten that out.

Lots of Husker fans made the trip today but the gym they play in is a dump. They set us in the south stands and one couldn't view the south quarter of the court from where we had to sit!!

A disappointing result is the best I have to offer. NU cannot play like this and expect to compete in the B1G. Did Maurer even play today? We were getting beat badly on the boards. Also, did Laudermill play? Hope this was a blip but it doesn't bode well for tougher teams coming up. This in no way is to take anything away from SDSU.

It's way to early to issue the distress signal, but it doesn't seem like a few key players did much to improve their games over the offseason. Perhaps that was because they weren't healthy. Maurer had major back surgery, so it is understandable that she isn't ready to go. She has a ton of work to do on her strength and her game. Laudermill is obviosuly out of sync with what Connie wants right now, as her minutes have been hard to get all year. Cady is in a bit of a sophomore slump, and is still struggling at the line. Hard to fathom Connie couldn't recruit one post player to provide inside depth, knowing we had a nucleus returning to have a great team. She could use another shooter also; we often have lineups where 2 players can't shoot it out on the floor at all, and that makes it hard for Hooper and Moore to get good shots. Our 3 point percentage has been ridiculous so far.

I totally agree with you, especially that Connie couldn't recruit one true post player for this year which we sorely need. Heck, we've needed a true post up big player ever since Kelcy Griffin left. She hasn't recruited even one post that was an offensive threat around the basket. With us being a top 25 program and especially right after the season Griffin and company had, I find it hard to believe that Connie couldn't get one better than average big kid. And to think that she has some of the greatest facilities in the country. That being said, I am excited that she has the 6'5" kid coming in next year (can't remember her name right now).
