uneblinstu's postgame chatter: Vol: 10; ed: 5 - Advocare Invitational - Central Florida

Nothing is easy!  We’ll have to earn every win.  Doesn’t mean not beating teams by 20 is a “bad” thing.  Look at Purdue and Arizona who will meet in the 7th place game!

We really need to find some gel and mojo.  One thing we are missing is “the guy.”  The guy who says “damnit, this shit ain’t happening again” when we haven’t scored for a few possessions.  The guy that says “give me the rock and I’ll put it in the hole.” We have multiple guys who could be that guy.  It’ll come around (I hope).  Don’t let two early season losses get to us.

While UCF and St. John’s might have the better team now (maybe, because we played like poo for 3/4 quarters).  I can confidently say that we have the higher ceiling come March.

Tough to win in March when you aren't a good shooting team (currently under 40% from the field, 30% from three). What makes you confident we will improve? I legitimately want to know why people think things will improve (other than hope).

What rankings are you looking at?  As of Monday, KenPom had St John's 48th, and UCF 64th.  Their RPI's are 28th and 22nd respectively.

We really should be 9 - 4 in non conference.  That means a 7 - 11 record is all we need in conference to go 16 - 15.  Still doable.

Watson has struggled trying to be the stud scorer and shooter this year.

Palmer had a nice 2nd half.  Hopefully he can carry that on going forward.  Really need him to take pressure off Watson.

Taylor has been decent.  Seems to have a better stroke from 3 than last year.  Doesn't shoot very many, though.

Copeland had a big game, and then struggled offensively, again.  Need more consistency from him.

Jordy had his best half of the season in the 2nd half.

Okeke is a foul waiting to happen.

Roby had his worst outing of the year.  Not much he could do going up against a guy 9 inches taller than him.

McVeigh is giving nothing to this team.

Gill has had 2 solid games.  Hopefully can give this team something offensively to help off the bench.

Allen's injury is a bummer.  Really need him to get healthy for his shooting.

Nana and Thor should have redshirted.

This team needs all it's parts playing well.  That hasn't happened, yet.  Doesn't mean it won't happen.

If you read the post again, I said we have the higher ceiling.  I didn’t say we will do better.  I think that’s 100% true.  We have a lot more solid pieces than either of those two teams.  Our ceiling is much higher now actually.

Improvement will naturally happen over a period of time.  Now improvement and confidence are two different things.  I don’t think with our shooting woes we lack the inability to improve.  I think we lack confidence.  Palmer, Glynn, Copeland, Allen etc. are all capeable.  I think you need to look no further than Taylor to see that we improve, but we also lack confidence.

As I mentioned in another post, we need “the guy.”  We need someone who can score when the basket looks like a nail hole to everyone.  That is our problem right now.  When things start going bad, everyone panics.  We need someone to step up and score.  When the basket looks like an ocean, everyone will score.  We just need to find someone to turn the nail hole into an ocean.

Once again, I can confidently say that our ceiling is much higher than the two teams we have lost to.  We just need to find the right ladders to get us there.  I also believe that we need to keep in mind that this group of guys has played a grand total of 5 games together.  4 if our top 8 are new to the program.  I think it’ll start to gel.  I think January could be a really fun month.  We have to take our lumps early though.

After taking a few hours to get over that debacle, I think (1) The season is still early, too soon to write it off (2) Hopes of 2014 repeating is fool's gold, not a legitimate expectation. If this season is going to be different, then we need to see something in the next few weeks to build upon. This just doesn't look like a team right now, we're sub-100 in the analytics ratings. (3) I won't be ready to jump on board the analysis of what's wrong and who the next coach will be until it's obvious this season is a bust. (4) Burp.

We have to play a majority zone defense this season.  Mix in man to man to change it up.

Why can't all our guys have a good night at the same time?  Palmer has a good night, but Copeland and Watson have a terrible night.

Not a big fan of the sub pattern in the 2nd half.  Gill with only 3 minutes was questionable.  I kind of understand going with the guys that trimmed the lead, but he finally has some confidence in his shot.

Allen must be banged up.

Can't shoot 34 % and allow the other team to shoot 51 % and expect to win.

Watson has 11 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals.  Far from a "terrible night."  Yes he was 5/17 from field, but still, far from terrible.

Glynn is shooting like freshman year Glynn. If we can hide Jack or even Nana in a zone that could help our shooting woes.

Was Palmer attacking in the first half? I think his hang in the air game can be effective vs giant slower dudes like Tacko vs springy guys like sju had

13 TOs doesn't seem like a lot but it's a lot against a team like UCF that doesn't put pressure on you.  Needed it to be a single digit number.

We outshot UCF in terms of volume by winning the turnover and rebounding battle...that's what we needed to do and part of the reason this wasn't a blowout.

How much did the fouls and height take Roby out of his game? (I didn't get to watch a ton). 0-2 on two 3pt attempts? 0 assists? The staff needs to encourage him to be more assertive.

Those ratings are bunk for end of season evaluation. Both st John's and UCF should be high quality loses at the end of the year

If St John's or UCF win the Advocare Invitational it might be enough to get them ranked next week.

To be fair, back in 2014 hopes for what actually happened appeared to be fool's gold as well.  I'd say we have about a 1 in 5 chance of a couple guys getting hot down the stretch and getting some breaks with the schedule, and making the postseason.

Ummm.... UCF is currently ranked 21 and St. John's 27 in that...  Ok....

Plus any ranking that has Vermont ranked 4th should be discounted anyway.

The coaches need to leave his ass on the court.  14 minutes is completely ridiculous given what Roby has shown us so far.  He's been the best athlete on the court of every game we've played this year.

That first half was as ugly as any I have seen from the huskers. Terrible shooting, terrible passing and zero offensive flow. I know most on this board are against giving Nana a shot but I say we should try him instead of Jack. It could not be worse than what Jack has given this team. He gets blown out on defense every time. Freshman or not, the guy is more athletic and at least has as good of a stroke as Jack.

You might be right in a vacuum but how are we supposed to come back in a game where we're down big and Roby is shooting even less than he usually does?  Also, his minutes were somewhat limited by picking up 3 fouls in 5 minutes in the 2nd half.

We hit more shots in the second half for sure, but everything we accomplished in that comeback happened as a result of zone defense.  Roby, in theory, is deadly in a zone.  Regardless, college coaches in general are complete idiots when it comes to foul trouble.  I'd much rather have Roby log 25 minutes and foul out than 15 minutes and come out with 3.  Let him foul out.  Same with Jordy--who finally got extended minutes regardless of how bad he started and magically filled up the stat sheet.  Good players adjust to the game, but they have to have enough time to do so.

Semantics. Saying we have a higher ceiling implies that we will be better than them. To be better than them, we have to improve.

Counting on "the guy" hasn't gone so well the past three years. (2014 was the anomaly.)

Thinking "it'll start to gel" is not a legitimate reason you think we will improve. A lot of what you mentioned is on the coaching staff to figure out. Unfortunately, recent history tells us that is unlikely.
