uneblinstu's postgame chatter: Vol: 10; ed: 3 - @ St. John's

First half:

  • St. John’s, from the opening tip, looked like they cared about this game. They came out aggressive and played with passion. NU looked surprised by that. SJU’s athleticism smothered NU’s guards. They were disruptive and pesky. The arena seemed to be fairly sleepy, not a ton of atmosphere. NU seemed to match that energy. St. John’s on the other hand, wasn’t gonna let that dictate their effort. They played with purpose and sensed opportunity. They punched NU in the nose and the Huskers recoiled.
  • It’s so annoying because it’s stretches of basketball like this that validates all the skepticism people have about this team and program. They are more talented than they showed in these first three games.
  • For as much was made about NU’s supposed advantage in the paint, it’s been St. John's that controlled it.
  • Watson’s foul trouble loomed large.

Second half:

  • It turned into a street fight. The team from Queens won it. What kind of mental toughness does this team have?
  • After that technical foul on Palmer they called everything, that was NU’s opportunity. They couldn’t take advantage of it.
  • Copeland’s gonna make a 3 at some point, right?
  • Maybe it was St. John's athleticism, but NU didn’t look like much defensively, they really haven't in what I've been able to see from them all year. If they don’t figure that out soon, it’s gonna be a rough season. It might be anyway.
  • Maybe they're just a bad shooting team, but this was really bad tonight.

I’m super annoyed by this game. I don’t have much else to say right now.

jordy looks worse than last year which i didn't expect to happen.

copeland does not look better than morrow at this point.

watson had the worst game of his career.

miles seemed to have no answer for st johns. not a good sign.

terrible ball movement on offense, weak screens, and out of control when attacking the basket.

miles needs to drastically change his offensive gameplan or it's going to be a long year.

Change the offensive gameplan? To be fair...we actually had quite a bit of open looks. But to also be fair...we have been bad on offense for years. I don’t see that magically changing unfortunately.  Not shocked we lost. But I am shocked at just how disorganized we are. Not good. Not good at all

That was tough to watch. To be clowned like some bottom-feeder Summit League team the final 5 minutes was as bad as it gets.

SJ made it a game all about toughness and aggressiveness, and we shied away for the vast majority of the game. Concerning, as that happened for a good chunk of the EIU game too.

Lots of work to do on the psyche of this team, at least for starters.

Hopefully this was a blip and not a trend.

The Good :

Not much

Roby played another good game.  8 pts 6 reb 2 ast 0 to's 1 blk in 22 minutes.  By far, playing the best on the team, so far, this year.

Taylor's shot looks much better.

The bad :

Pretty much everything

Very sloppy with the ball, especially the 1st half with 11 turnovers.

Shooting was awful.

Lost our composure.  Cannot happen.  Can't let the other team get under your skin.  Refs did not help, letting St John's talk non-stop after Palmer's T.

The ugly :

The last 3 minutes turned into a dunk contest for St John's.

Good:

  • It is one game
  • That one game is over

Bad:

  • About everything
  • The last 4 minutes was seriously disappointing
  • The refs (Didn't lose us the game).  You cannot let one team talk and the other team not.  Just can't happen.  St. John's had fun, partly because they could and we could not, and partly because they were kicking the living snot out of us.

Ugly:

  • Effort at the end
  • Our heart

Next Steps:

  • Beat NDU
  • Go 2-1 in Orlando
  • Right back to where we want to be.

Things:

1.  When Jordy is in, let him work the LOW post.  Good god, recognize the mismatch.

2.  Start Roby.  He's our best player.  He needs to get huge minutes.

3.  Give Allen Gill's minutes.  Let the kid get acclimated and take his lumps.

4.  Play zone against tiny teams who do nothing but isolate guards.

Awful coaching tonight.  I hate cowtowing to other teams and what they do.  We should've rolled out a lanky lineup, played zone, and beat them up inside.  Instead, we tried to be St. John's.  Stupid.

Miles will be fired after his season, until then we’ll get a bunch of the same.  We’ll see bad games like this that are almost unwatchable and others where the team will come out and look good, ultimately I’ll be surprised if we crack .500.

Dale, you're like the angel of death.  You show up when things look bleak and everyone kind of checks their pulse to make sure they're not the ones dying.

When you show up it means something bad happened.
