Scouting St John's

I only was able to watch a handful of minutes; Seemed like the offense was finding a way to penetrate into/near the paint and then making the right decision on scoring or finding teammates if the defense collapsed. They don't seem like a particularly patient team and it's possible we can have them shooting bad shots all night (which they just might make). Can they be patient with that speed? Almost everyone can take and make 3s on that team so if they want to hunt for them we've yet to prove we can stop that.

Everyone on this team can take and make 3s except for their two shot blockers Owens and Yakwe. Both are cleanup guys on offense.

Mich St transfer Marvin Clark is a classic Izzo post player in size: 6'7", 230lbs. He either plays the 4 with one of the shot blockers or plays the 5 in a small ball lineup. We can absolutely attack the rim with him as the 5, assuming we can get past the guards.

Simon, the Arizona transfer, doesn't seem to be much of a 3pt shooter. Ponds and LoVett are though. All 3 of them will drive the lane, drawing contact, shooting, or making passes. If our guards can play them to a draw offensively, we'll win this because our back court is better.

Clark helps but this team struggles on both sides rebounding. Extra possessions are there for us should yet another team outshoot us.

Defensively they're focused on turning us over to fuel their fast break. Glynn handling the ball will help. Everyone else keeping their cool and understanding you can burn these guys will lead to some easy buckets.

Until Miles & Co. can sufficiently stop the three-point gunning teams, that still appears to be the downfall on D at this point in the program.

Which is really rough, when you realize that the 3 in this era of basketball is more popular than it's ever been. (Steph curry, etc etc) It's a staple of any contending team. So we have to face it and work on it. Miles can do it, I believe, but it's gonna be tough.

Over the past 2-3 years I have this searing vision of Husker players desperately running/jumping in futile attempts to contest opposing players draining 3s.   Much of this seemed to be lack of a Big and doubling down in the paint, and wasn't quite as prevalent last year.  It will be interesting to see what happens this season with our increased size and length.

Early posts from their message boards are basically

-- They are a little worried about our size

-- They think that they should win.  Point to Vegas line at SJU by 9.

-- Think it will be quite the guard battle

-- Are a little worried about Mr. Roby and his averaging a Double Dounble off the bench.

I don't bet, but I'd seriously think about it with 9 points.

Yeah, is contend that we look much more like a conventional solid basketball team this year. Real athletic basketball players, finally.

Thomas Allen and Anton Gill are both questionable for tomorrow's game.

That leaves 8 guys who have played over ten minutes total in the first two games.  And I don't think that Jordy and Duby (and Borchardt) will combine for 40 minutes at the five against a small lineup, unless Jordy suddenly becomes unstoppable on offense.  So that leaves six guys to fill up 160+ minutes, unless Nana sees the floor.

You must be young, or at least younger. Chris Mullin, Bill Wennington, Walter Berry, Marc Jackson off the bench - final four team.

If the Final Four matchups had been different, and it had been Georgetown-Villanova and St.John's-Memphis State in the semis, St. John's probably would have won it.  Memphis would never have beaten St. John's, Villanova would never had beaten St. John's. Villanova had lost to St. John's three times that year and didn't match up very well.  St. John's had beaten Georgetown once, but were never going to beat them again; they won the first meeting by one and then lost to them by double figures the next three times they played.  And Villanova-Georgetown, even though it's considered one of the biggest upsets of all time, was actually a toss up.  Villanova should have won the first meeting that year but they lost by two, then they lost by seven at Georgetown.   (Billy Packer said early on during the game that Boeheim had told him before the Final Four that St. John's could absolutely not beat Georgetown, but Villanova can.)

Villanova did beat Georgetown that night but Georgetown wins that matchup 9 out of 10 times with those two rosters. Vilanova shot almost 80% from the floor. They only missed 6 shots for the entire game and still only won by a basket. They don't shoot that well ever again.

Maybe Georgetown wins 9 out of 10 against them, maybe 7 or 8 out of 10.  I'd watched the game the first time they played and Villanova gave them fits.  But against anyone else in that tournament field, at that point in the season - that Georgetown team wins 10 out of 10.

So if the semifinals are St. John's vs Villanova and Georgetown vs. Memphis, then Georgetown beats St. John's in the final.  If it's Georgetown vs. Villanova and St. John's vs. Memphis, Villanova has a chance to win and St. John's beats them in the final.  But it was Georgetown vs. St. John's in the semis, and Villanova ended up winning.
