Border State Hoops

The idea that we can't recruit good players because of our geography, weather, etc. is absolutely ridiculous. Sure, we haven't done a very good job at winning our state over the last decade or two, but how does Nebraska fare when compared to its border states? Here's a look at how these states performed this year:

I don't think anybody would argue that we have some disadvantages due to the overall lack of talent that comes out of this state.  Of course, when high major talent does come out of the state and you don't recruit them then that excuse is no longer valid.  But you're right, other teams do it all around us...and some are even doing it with less "stars."  It takes the right mix of talent/coaching and identity.  It would appear we are falling short in all of those categories right now.

It is astonishing to see just how poorly Missouri has done in the time frame you have chosen. They were a regular threat to Kansas' dominance in the Big 8 and did well in the Dance. That and the perennial mystery of why Colorado can't field really good teams. It does go to show that just have lots of quality players in your geographic area doesn't mean you will succeed as a program.

I don't know how many D1 programs you figured there are in the 7 states you listed, but by my calculations, there are currently 50 teams that are still alive in the various post-season tournaments (32 NCAA, 6 NIT, 4 CBI, 8 CIT) and only two of those 50 teams are from the 7 states you mentioned.  Only one team from those 7 states survived the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament.

By the way, does any of this data prove anything?  Husker Fever, I have no idea how the data you produced supports your conclusion that "[t]he idea that we can't recruit good players because of our geography, weather, etc. is absolutely ridiculous."

First part of your inquiry: that's correct, only Wyoming (CBI) and Kansas (NCAA) are still alive.

Second part: the results are completely up to interpretation and scrutiny. And you can fully argue that this is looking at a single season and isn't representative of the big picture. I just wanted to throw this together to see what it looked like since there wasn't any data readily available on it. You could also look at other factors other than outcomes such as Rival stars, coaching tenure, etc. and each of those are up to its own scrutiny as well. I think what this is showing me right now is how much Missouri and Colorado have been under performing compared to my predispositions. Another interesting thing I saw was that three of the states all had teams make a postseason tournament. Outside of that, no this data doesn't directly support "we can't recruit... because of our geography, weather, etc." Although, there are some Midwest schools out there that are doing pretty well.

For those looking to get their basketball fix tonight, look no further than the CBI championship match-up between Wyoming and Coastal Carolina. Hear me out:

1. Wyoming is the last remaining border state team still alive this season.

2. The CBI has instituted the NIT experimental rules + hard quarters (not 2 10-minute "segments"), which might be the wave of the future for the NCAA.

3. You couldn't get enough of Coastal Carolina's baseball team winning the national championship last year, so now you need to watch their basketball team potentially win a tournament championship of their own.

4. There's nothing else on TV.

5. It's on ESPNU.

Just note, the CBI has a best-of-three championship, so this is Game 1 (of potentially 3). The match-up is as follows:

Game 1 - March 27, 6:30 PM CDT - Wyoming at Coastal Carolina (ESPNU)

Game 2 - March 29, 8:00 PM CDT - Coastal Carolina at Wyoming (ESPNU)

Game 3* - March 31, 6:00 PM CDT - Coastal Carolina at Wyoming (ESPNU) *If necessary

One thing that would skew that against us is we have so many kids participating and this is based on participants, not number of high school kids. We have kids competing at D-1 and D-2 that wouldn't catch a whiff of varsity at bigger schools. Not saying we should be ranked highly, just pointing it out.

Basketball recruiting is a completely different animal than football recruiting.  There are numerous prep schools from New Jersey down to North Carolina that rival Class D Nebraska schools in size and would not exist but for their basketball program.  These teams travel all over the country with tutors in tow playing in tournaments.  For most of these kids, location means little to them.  Coaching, program prestige, NCAA tournament history, and NBA selections are far more important to these kids.  If you have the time, watch "Prayer for a Perfect Season" on HBO.  You see a lot of those issues discussed by those kids.
