Huskers Close WNIT with Colorado State

The Nebraska women’s basketball team (1-1) will close out its three-game appearance in the 2016 Preseason WNIT by playing host to Colorado State (1-1) on Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.

Tip-off between the Huskers and Rams is set for 7 p.m

Nebraska will try to rebound from a 55-35 loss to No. 25 Missouri in Monday night’s Preseason WNIT quarterfinals at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Huskers struggled offensively against a stingy bunch of Tigers. Sophomore Jessica Shepard was the only Husker to manage double figures, finishing with 12 points and nine rebounds, despite going just 4-of-17 from the floor and 3-of-7 at the free throw line.

Freshman Nicea Eliely, a 6-1 guard from Colorado Springs, Colo., added eight points and eight rebounds. Eliely was the only Husker to hit at least 40 percent (2-5) of her shots from the field. Eliely was an All-Colorado Class 5A player at Rampart High School a year ago and is off to a solid start at Nebraska. She has started both games for the Big Red and ranks second on the team in scoring (8.5 ppg), tied for third in rebounding (5.0 rpg), first in assists (3.0 apg) and tied for first in steals (1.0 spg). She also leads the Huskers in field goal percentage (.400) and free throw percentage (.667).

While the Huskers struggled offensively against Missouri, they have played solid defense themselves in each of their first two games. Nebraska is allowing just 54 points per game and opponents are shooting just 33.9 percent from the field, including just 21.3 percent from three-point range.

Probable Starters:
Nebraska Cornhuskers

32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - So. - F
22 - Allie Havers - 6-5 - Sr. - C
5 - Nicea Eliely - 6-1 - Fr. - G
11 - Esther Ramacieri - 5-8 - Sr. - G
34 - Jasmine Cincore - 5-10 - Jr. - G

Colorado State Rams

15 - Veronika Mirkovic - 6-1 - Jr. - F
22 - Elin Gustavsson - 6-3 - Sr. - F
5 - Sofie Tryggedsson - 6-0 - So. - G
10 - Hannah Tvrdy - 5-10 - Jr. - G - 5.0
13 - Ellen Nystrom - 6-1 - Sr. - G - 21.5

Colorado State comes to Lincoln after suffering a 101-68 loss to No. 17 Washington on Monday night in Seattle. The Rams opened the season with a 69-42 victory over Omaha in Fort Collins, marking their 16th consecutive home win at Moby Arena.

The Rams bring a heavy European flavor with them to Nebraska, including one player from Latvia, one from Denmark, one from Norway and five from Sweden.
In fact, three of the Swedes make up 60 percent of the starting lineup alongside Denmark’s Sofie Tryggedsson. The only American starter in the CSU lineup is Nebraska native Hannah Tvrdy.

Nebraska freshman Nicea Eliely ranks second on the team in scoring (8.5 ppg), tied for third in rebounding (5.0 rpg), first in assists (3.0 apg) and tied for first in steals (1.0 spg) through the first two games of her collegiate career.

• Nebraska and Colorado State have not met in women’s basketball since the 1996 NCAA Tournament.

Freshman guard Hannah Whitish also hit the first three of her career against UTRGV, while senior guard Esther Ramacieri set a career high by hitting two threes against the Vaqueros.

We'll see tonight how much the ream has learned in the past three games. Imperative the shot percentage raises drastically.

Our defense isn't to bad, holding opponents to decent numbers, so we've started off well defensively.

Pretty much playing against Europe tonight.

After game:

Good improvement.

Better shooting, better control of what they're trying to do.  Seem much more focused, and now more comfortable on the floor.

Each game they improve. Got lot's more to get better at before next game, but they are improving.

Actually CSU is a pretty good team, will probably win a bunch of games this year.

Wow, just about let that one slip away from us. It was frustrating to watch at times. Need to do a lot better job on the help defense under the bucket. Where's Allie? These last two games she's been a non-factor, we desperately need her at the top of her game. From here on out I'd like to see them start and play Hannah Whitish and Nicea E. These two freshmen made a difference tonight. They both should be pretty good by the time the end of the year.

Defense will keep us in ball games.  Better performance tonight.  We are improving.  The schedule is ridiculous.  As much as I wanted to close out this game, nothing came easy late in the game.  As a fan base, we have to remind ourselves we are young and inexperienced but progress is being made.  My biggest concern is a balance in scoring especially when they key on Jessica S down low.  Tonight...Hannah knocked down some clutch shots.  We need that from everyone in the rotation to take the heat off of Shep.

As bad as the shooting was against Missouri (15%) and outside of a 16-0 run at the end of the 1st quarter and running into 2nd quarter, our defense was good enough to give us a chance to win.

I don't like the schedule at all and can only hope it prepares for the grueling stretch of Big 10 play.  In the meantime, enjoyed the win.

being a senior, all of her experience, and at 6' 5"-------allie needs to be getting more than 2pts. however she can get it. yes, she is doing some other things well (ex. assists) but she has to assert herself around the basket on the offensive end. i know her game is more in that 8-14ft range, but, she shouldn't be missing those "bunnies". still hoping she can toy with that 8-12ppg.

Allie seemed to be into a nice flow last season. Was scoring, rebounding, etc. Not totally sure....but she maybe hasn't gotten the feel of the new offense yet (or her role in the offense). She played mostly near the basket last season, now she's all over the floor.  ...but she did get the crucial rebound with about 4 CSU defenders in the paint, to make the critical outlet pass to Hannah, for the 3, in the closing 1 1/2 min

.

Never thought Allie has been taught how to play with her back to the basket, and made it part of her game. But she just isn't a physical "banger" inside.  Jess on the other hand is excellent playing that way.

The whole team is still leaning the offense actually....and the whole team needs to get better rebounding.,,lots of things. Seems like everyone still in the learning mode.....and may be for a while.

Love Nicea and Hannah...they are picking up the college game quickly....will be good ones for sure. They both are very good at their apparent roles, NIcea as the off guard and defender, an Hannah is showing good point skills already. Just what the team needs.

I agree with what was said above.  For Allie the physical part of her game is her weak point both on offense and defense.  You could see last night that as we start moving the ball better at times from understanding the offense we started to get a few more open shots.  I think her offense will come around more as this happens as we need it.  Also as the guards continue to improve we will see more opportunities for her.
