Miles 10/5/2016 Presser

Another year starts off with another enthusiastic Tim Miles conference. Notes along with the video below:

Video

• Two offseason tweaks the team made were changing their weight training to try to get more gains and schematically changing the way they guard the perimeter (the “we got killed by 3 point shooting teams” problem). He likes both changes so far. The lineups are in flux because Miles doesn’t know exactly what he has in some of his younger players.

• The team seems as much on the same page as any he’s had…they have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. Have a bit of a ‘you’re with us or against us’ mentality.

• Gill is a couple weeks out from practicing. Anton had a procedure on his knee to help elevate knee tendinitis. Anton will be ready to start the season.

• Roby is a month out from practicing. He had a stress reaction in his pelvis bone which has meant no activity to heal him up. Miles doesn’t know when Roby will be ready to play but when healthy he will immediately join the rotation. Miles noted he was among the best players on the team.

• Miles empathically states that Jordy is going to play. In addition to just the sheer length and size he brings to the table it seems that Jordy is a fast learner and actively seeks ways to improve his game. Miles feels his limitation in time will be more about foul trouble than conditioning.

• Backing up Glynn at PG to start will be Tai and Evan Taylor. Mentioned Watson playing off ball at the 2 which would mean we could see Tai initiate the offense even when Watson is on the floor. Taylor is a fast guard with good defensive instincts. Webster and Taylor are two long athletic kids when paired on defense; Webster, Taylor, and Watson are 3 fast guys on defense (more pressing?) We’re thin on guards, especially with neither Gill nor Roby currently able to play…a statement that points to Roby playing the sort of wing position ala Shields as opposed to something like PF.

• Horne currently projects as a perimeter player. Miles notes him as skilled, passing and shooting well. Also notes his competitiveness …will get beat on defense and then come back and make a 3 with someone all over him. Needs to learn to defend better and improve his conditioning.

• Jacobson and Morrow put on a lot of muscle and strength over the offseason. The 19 lbs of muscle on Jacobson has added confidence (anyone remember him getting killed at Purdue?) Morrow often times in practice powers through the much larger Jordy. They “stat” every practice/workout and his numbers are the best on the team. He finishes a lot of plays and rebounds well on both ends. Expect to see him build on his finish at the end of last year. Reading into what Miles had to say it seems Jordy starts at the 5 with Morrow or Jacobson to start at the 4. McVeigh and Roby are also in the mix at the 4.

ATM I think our starting lineup is

Watson

Gill

Webster

Morrow

Jordy

The first subs are

Jacobson for either Jordy/Morrow

McVeigh if a Watson/Gill/Webster come out.

If/when Roby is ready to go I think you might see one of the guards come off the bench with Roby at the 3.

Jacobson off the bench? Interesting.

I'm going with:

Watson

Gill

McVeigh

and a front court combo of either MJ/EM or MJ/JT

*Roby in for McVeigh if he's healthy and in game shape by the start of the season.

I think Morrow is a better 4 than Jacobson.  I think Jacobson is a better 5 than Morrow, which probably means Jacobson will be more of a utility player for both the 4-5 positions.  He's kind of like the Webster of the front court.  Those two rarely got to play together last year, so that'll be a nice option as they're both very high energy.

Sounds like having a center will let us finally guard the 3pt line.

It also sounds like we have some really high character kids this year.  I'm excited to watch them gel.

Jacobson off the bench? Interesting.

It seems that we're going to roll with Jordy starting at the 5.

Thus, it's either him or Morrow at the 4 and ATM seems like Morrow. Regardless all 3 will see a lot of minutes.

I definitely see the reasoning behind that especially since Miles has started bigger centers and not played them a lot (if Jordy isn't ready to average a large amount of minutes).

Nah, it'll be Webster, not McVeigh. McVeigh will be in the mix to start next year.

The logic behind starting Watson, Gill, and Tai is definitely solid bc there is a good chance those could be your 3 best players. Tai off the bench is just my personal preference plus having 3 of your 4 gaurds on the floor worries me bc of foul trouble. But we will find out soon. Thankfully it is sooner than later now.

I agree which is why I was confused when I read Jacobson was in the mix to start at the 4 (Morrow was not mentioned) and that Morrow would be getting alot of minutes at center.

Chances of all three of them getting in foul trouble in the same game is remote. I think Webster is quite a bit better than McVeigh, though their games are certainly different, which to me makes it a fairly easy call to start him, I think. And I think, by and large, you want your three best players on the court to start the game.

I know Miles has said "you are what you guard", but I wonder with MJ and EM if they effectively switch depending on the end of the court (i.e., defense - MJ/5; EM/4 and offense - MJ/4; EM/5).  EM would maybe have more freedom on the defensive end to go swat shots/hunt rebounds and MJ bodies up the center.  On the offensive end MJ could drift to the perimeter ("the stretch 4") while EM posts up or executes the pick-and-roll since he doesn't have the same shooting range as MJ.

Tai to me seems like the ultimate big brother to a big family of boys

the basketball culture at nebraska has just changed

I'm sure I've said this somewhere on this site before

But im expecting better than what we are being picked

MJ can definitely step outside and hit his shots.  He is a true four, not a five.  Even in HS he played the four.  I believe Jack will be playing quite a bit at the four as well.

As a junior in high school Jacobson also played mostly at the 3.  The 5 was a 6'10" Pepperdine recruit and the 4 was a 6'7" Iowa defensive end recruit.
