So who do we want to win tonight, Michigan or NW???

Do we want one really good win (home blowout of Mich) or two pretty good wins (home blowout of Mich and road blowout of NW)?

I personally think having a better quality road win would help us more so I'd go with Northwestern, rather than a team we beat at home. But as I type this I'm already second-guessing my decision.

Why 'The New Deal' (Fran's contract extension) was kept under wraps at Iowa:

https://amp.hawkcentral.com/amp/1075928001

Iowa athletics director Gary Barta on Monday responded with a strong endorsement of his eighth-year men’s basketball coach, calling McCaffery the right man to lead the Hawkeyes “for the long haul.”

“When I hired him, he re-energized a broken program. He’s a tireless recruiter. He’s done a great job in recruiting.

“I don’t think I’ve ever announced extending a coach’s contract in the middle of the season. The reason I don’t like to do that: It distracts from playing the games, playing the season.

“Many times, when we announce coaches’ contracts, it’s for recruiting. In this case, we didn’t need an advantage in recruiting. Recruiting’s been going fine. So I made the decision to wait until the end of the season, knowing full well … it could get out during the season. I hoped that it would be after the season — not because I’m worried about how we’re playing. But I just did not want to have this conversation in the middle of the season. But it is what it is. And there was no conspiracy. “I could’ve announced it. I chose not to. There’s really nothing in it to hide. It’s fair for people to criticize.”

Barta confirmed Monday, without revealing the school or number, that there was “more than one” such opportunity. When asked if there were at least two Power Five opportunities, he gave a one-word answer: “Yes.”

Final 10 min of NU game and first 6 min of NW game, Wisky was outscored 48-9 ... at home. I realize they've had some injuries, but that roster is just bad right now.

Will be interesting to see whether UW considers a coaching change - Gard has had some success, but not sure how Alvarez feels about him, since Ryan's mid-season retirement a few years back kind of forced Gard on Alvarez. If Alvarez wants to make his own hire, this season's results give him the perfect opportunity.

Two sweet 16's in a row before this year should buy Gard some slack.   Almost anywhere else not named Kentucky or Duke it gets a statue erected outside the arena.

One of their big tripes is that “He’s doing it with Bo’s players.”  I have seen this multiple times on the message board over there.  Instead of giving Gard credit, they are saying he is only having success thanks to Bo.

Yeah but it’s true. You know who didn’t suck when we played them? Ethan Happ! Why? Because Bo Ryan! If Gard had more players like him (which he did in previous years due to Ryan) of course he went to the sweet 16. Also who care what his coaching ability is if he’s going to have bad players. I just don’t see anything telling me he can recruit from their team this year. But maybe I’m wrong and they’re like our team last year.

Something interesting that’s setting up is that we probably have a 75% chance of being the four or 5 seed in the B1G tournament and will play Michigan if one of us wins the 5 vs 12 match-up. This will give us a chance to get that big win everyone’s talking about even if we go 4-2 that win still gets us in IMO and if we’re 6-0  that loss won’t matter too much

Ohio St has suspended Kam Williams indefinitely for team rules violation. Man, the number of key players injured/suspended in the B1G this year has been unreal. (And now I'll be spending the next hour knocking on every piece of wood I can find in a 2-mile radius.)

The Bucknuts are stinking it up at home vs Illinois through 12+ minutes, down double digits.

Ha - that didn't last. Illinois went on its typical huge scoring drought like it does every game -- and then some. Illinois didn't score the final 10+ minutes of the half and gave up a 19-0 run - OSU by 4 at half.

Neither team playing all that well, OSU has 10+ turnovers, but Illinois does that to teams. They're good at mucking it up on the defensive end, not so good at scoring. Can't remember the last time I saw a 10+ minute scoring drought ... and they'll get to continue it into the second half.
